Confused about Showing Data - Did Horse Really Level Up?
  • I'm desperately trying to get a grip on my show horses, become somewhat competent at comprehending the showing system and develop a personal organizational system to help me manage them a little more easily and weed out the ones that need to go down the road.

I've started to pay attention to the barn's 'My Show Results" page to help sort horses that have leveled and might need to rest and have noticed that many times the results page says a horse has "Leveled Up!" but according to the horse's page the horse is still in the same Level and Grade, for example 3R, which is the same Level and Grade it showed in previous shows. If I attempt to hand enter the horse to determine what Level/Grade the horse is being recognized as, 3R is what is offered despite supposedly having leveled up.

Doesn't Leveled Up! mean that the horse has either moved up a level or a grade? I'm confused. The horse below has neither increased in Level or Grade.

Here is a link to a horse's page, "Did I Level Up": http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=2489195

Link to Did I level Up's Barn Show Results page: http://www.huntandjump.com/results.php?owner=46664&barn=3474

I am also seeing the 'My Show Results" page saying that a horse has a "New High Score!" when the previous score was the same score in previous shows: Horse: http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=2024609, Barn Show Results: http://www.huntandjump.com/results.php?owner=46664&barn=11558

I am pretty sure I have one or two horses that also have yo-yoed grades but I didn't think to save their links. Basically they were in a barn I have been trying to keep tabs on and noting their current level/grades on their pages and noticed that they had dropped a grade according to the previously noted level/grade. Are these horse's buggy?

    Thanks in advance!

  • To be honest i have never used the show results page to look at my horses show results. Your example definitely needs some time to rest.
The way i sort my show string is by using rest barns. Its the best system i've found when you start getting big barns and you use auto show.
I keep a few empty barns, 2/3 times a week i go through all my showing barns and remove every horse that has a negative earnings. These go into a barn with a date. This barn then gets a 3/4 week rest period before i turn on auto show. Every horse that gets picked up i then put in a check barn, if they are now in the money they get shown again and returned to the show barns, if they are still negative then back to rest.

In simple form, if a show horse is in the bottom half of their show they need time out, how much time depends on level and PT, but usually 3/4 weeks is enough. You can sometimes find the higher PT horses are bad earners in the lower levels as they level so quickly they often hit a bad spot every time, but they will be your main earners when they get to 9/10yrs.
  • Hmm, I find it very interesting on how others go about showing their horses. I will try to help out the best that I can with my method. First the 'My Show Results' page is quite helpful & is a quick way to see how a horse has done in the most recent show it's been in. But I can't say that the 'Leveled Up' or 'New High Score' is super accurate or helpful. I personally don't pay any attention to them. What I have been doing lately, is paying attention to when a horse has entered a local level & then adding 2 weeks from that date & marking it in the horses name. This way I can quickly go through my barns & see who I should be entering on what day. So, for example, this horse, http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=2531179, leveled up to a local level 2 weeks ago when I marked it with a date, and now I know that I can enter her & possibly win some money with her. I won't know for sure seeing she's never been shown yet & don't know how many points she earns per week. But at least I won't have lost as much as I may have, if she had just leveled up into the local level & most likely end up in last spot. From here on in, I will show that particular horse anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks from now, depending on her score on her first show.

I have no idea whether this will be of any help or not, or if it even makes sense. But don't let showing discourage you, I'm sure if you give it a little time, you will get the hang of it. If I can be of anymore assistance, don't be shy to pm me :)

  • Thanks for the replies. I am in the process of sorting horses (trying to note their current levels till I get back through to place them in appropriate barns or culling them) and renaming barns (Rest, Showing, Check/Try, Retired/Do Not Show). I was just hoping someone could tell me if the 'Leveled Up!" and "New High Score!" discrepancies are normal and that I should regard them with caution, knowing that they aren't always accurate.
  • I seem to remember Ammit saying a while ago that the "My Show Results" page has some issues but that she didn't have any plans to update it since other things were a lot more important.

  • I always understood it like this: leveled up means that the horse went to an higher level, for example from 3R to 3N, and the high score just simply means it scored higher then it ever did. Since a horse that hasn't leveled off yet gains a few points every week after training it will get this message untill it has leveled up.
I personally only use the my show results page to see if I can enter a horse for the second time so I don't have to go through them all. But every week I click on each individual horse to calculate it's score, show it, and I check on the show results page how they did and if their score is high enough to make me money a second time that week.
