Appaloosa Gene
-
With the new updates Ammit is making to the Appaloosa genes, I have one question.
I noticed a new gene on my Appaloosas.
For example
EE AtAt CC Dd gg Ff SstySsty pp KittoKit SpsSp LlpL ECA3P+ECA3P+ Rbrb WF: None
What exactly is ECA3P and does the + mean anything? I clicked on the link but it wasn't really enlightening. -
From what I could understand, it's the old PATN gene. Was Rebecca Iavelli on the old forum

Think! - It's not illegal yet. -
+ means wild type in genetics. That horse has no mutations at that gene.
We never had a PATN gene before. We have a complex called PATN that represented the whole range of appy blanket sizes but was not a gene. PATN has not been turned into ECA3P and blanket size is much more complicated now. Most of the control genes are hidden.Need to contact me? Read this first.

So what would a mutation on the ECA3P look like then?
What does ECA3P do? -
You can click on the link for that gene, or go to the Genetics guide for the information that Ammit has posted on it. A search for appaloosas will give you a look at the variations, including different looks for that gene in combination with Llp.

I had to do some research.
I am still mystified by what the ECA3p gene is.
However I did find out some information on the PATN1.
If an Appy has one copy of Lp and has PATN1, then the Appy will most likely be a leopard or a near leopard.
If an Appy has two copies of Lp and has PATN1, then the Appy will most likely be a few spot or near few spot.
That's all I've found so far. -
ECA3P is where the Lp mutation occurs in the horse's genome.
ECA3P+ means there has been no mutation.Post edited by Raina at 2015-10-27 19:00:16Imation Stud ID# 2609

That info is in the genetics guide.
Produces no visual effect at all with out the appaloosa gene present. With appaloosa the mutation PATN1 of this gene heavily promotes white blanket markings. Homozygous PATN1 horses will tend to have very large blanket markings and may be full leopards.Need to contact me? Read this first.
