Damages

What does the damages mean?
-
Just like real horses, Hunt and Jump horses sometimes get into trouble that requires spending some of our hajibucks for repair bills, replacement of equipment, or emergency vet visits (all in the background, of course). All we see is the cost to the stable of whatever it is that happened. Once upon a time, in the early days of the game, before there were many tests available to sort out good breeders from poor ones (before my time, but I've heard about it) damages was a way to sort out horses that were not worth keeping and single instances of damages could be very costly.
Now, the majority of the time the cost is low--less than 5 hajibucks. I've occasionally seen damages over 20 hbs, but that is very rare. Usually I check out any horse whose damages are over 5 just to see what they are like otherwise, but unless they are frequently having higher than normal damages and haven't collected enough points to offset the damage costs, I usually decide to keep them.
We had a project earlier this year to suggest possible causes for damages and got quite a list of stories about barn mishaps, some of them rather funny. Ammit may get around to adding them sometime in the future, but I expect it will take some creative programming. Her primary project at the moment is the upgrades to the horse images, especially the innovative and complex programming to improve the appaloosa imaging to make it function more like the real-life genetics both in the background interaction of genes and in appearance. -
I've seen a topic about a horse that had 312 hbs in damages (for one night!) and that animal had very low quality. When costs of damages are very high that means that horse's quality is low.Post edited by Azadeh at 2015-12-06 10:49:24understand the significance of signatures

I had one foal, not too long ago, who caused upwards of 800hb worth of damages in the first week I had him. It wasn't just one isolated incident, either, it was pretty much every time I logged in he'd done something else to add about 200hb to his total. Needless to say, that naughty pony went to yum (because if he's causing that much damage, I don't need him, and he will probably never break even in showing bonus).

Wow. Yeah, I wouldn't worry about damages as long as it was under 5 hbs. Any higher and I would look more at the horse in depth. Yeah I remember that project. I'm wondering when she'll get to that one.
