Superior to Sire but has lower PT?
  • I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before, but what should I make out of a 2G "B" papered son (with a 9.6 PT) that comparison tested to his sire, is said to be superior to his B papered sire (with 10.4 PT)?

I also had a few B papered sons test superior to their A paper foundation sires. Opinions?

I tend to lean more towards breeding for color then for showing ability but I am trying to be more selective at who gets snipped. Though if they have the color I am looking for and fall into the category above I am feeling very conflicted.

    Thanks in advance!
  • The comparison test looks at breeding ability. PT score is showing ability. No relation. :)
  • Your B papered colts would not have tested superior to an A papered stallion. Papering is an indication of breeding ability and A is better than B

  • Sorry, was a typo, I meant to say a B papered son tested As Good As an A papered sire. Like this horse:

I have this 2G B colt that papered As Good As his A sire.

I also have this 4G A papered colt test As Good as his STAR sire.

  • There is some overlapping at the edges of the paper levels. So, a low A might be "about as good as" a very high B, meaning that he's just a little bit better. And the 4G A is worse than his low level Star sire but still is a high enough A to fall in the "about as good as" range with his sire.

  • The reason you can have a colt with a lower PT but a superior comparison test to his sire is that breeding ability (measured by papering and comparison test) and training ability (measured by PT) are determined separately. The game combines the breeding ability of the parents with a random factor according to a formula only Ammit knows twice, once for the foal's breeding ability and a second time for its training ability. So it is possible for a foal to get its breeding ability at the high end of the possible numbers for those parents and its training ability at the low end, high training and low breeding, both high, both low or any other combination in between.
