Tattoo Decisions!
  • I am trying to decide on a tattoo to put on horses I breed
    image

I personally like these ones the best: Top one on the left, or the second one down on the right. If any one has any ideas for it let me know :D

  • I agree that those two are the best. If you are planning to put them on the horse itself, and you have black or very dark horses, you might want to consider making the letters two-tone--dark and light, so that they can be read on darker horses.

  • I prefer the second one down on the right over the top left, personally. It just seems more sophisticated :)

@Redbud - that link just says "you do not own this horse" if we try to follow it to the tack manager.

  • Hmm, I didn't even think of adding another color. I'll have to mess around more. How do you use them exactly like I've noticed they can be on the horse on the haunches or shoulder, or off the horse?

  • I usually put larger, colorful tattoos in the corners and keep the ones that go onto the horses fairly small and simple. Ammit once commented that square, colorful tattoos on horses reminded her of postage stamps, and that stuck in my mind.

Here is a horse with my stable tattoo:

(now deceased and in the archive)

and one with the Eos tattoo for my line of homozygous sooty flaxen chestnuts:

and one with my DP tattoo (Greek letters for D Ph):

and one used for my Gold and Gold potential mares on a light colored spot:

    and on a darker horse

I make the letters with a dark color, often black, and then outline it with a pale gray or white. My stable tattoo was originally just green, but it got very, very blurry on bays, especially, so as soon as I was able to edit tattoos that were already on horses, I put a lighter color around it, which helped it a lot. The Eos tattoo is the most colorful of all the ones I put on horses.

The tattoo places on horses are the hip, the thigh (Top Mares is there), the withers, the shoulder, the cheek, and the inner lip (which makes them invisible). Off the horse, there is room for one in each corner, although if you're careful about size and placement, they can be doubled up. For instance, my daughter uses a butterfly for one of the sabinos and a flower just below it for the other, in the upper right corner.

The butterfly on top is for Sabino 1 and the flower below it is for Sabino 2.

  • Can I make a tattoo and put it on a horse and change it later? That way I could see how it looks on a horse?

  • I've been messing around, personally I like this one

    Maybe this one in blue?
I like this one but prefer the red over it.

  • When I'm making tattoos, I try them on a horse and if it doesn't work I remove it, edit it, and try again. If you can afford the 500 hbs for taking it off, I'd recommend that. And if it's actually going on the horse, I'd try it out on different colors to see how it works. If you're going with the red, I think it might be hard to see or might clash with some of the shades of bay. The all dark letters will disappear on black horses, too. Outlining the letters with a lighter color might help that.

    image
  • Or you can always put the tattoo on the lip if it's going to clash with the horse's coloring.
  • I think I'll try putting it on a horse and see how it looks.

I was wondering, if you didn't breed the horse but you are using it for breeding purposes can you put tattoos on it? I'd be okay with some one adding a tattoo to a horse I bred but no longer own but I wasn't sure if there are guild lines or anything about it.

  • Here it is on a darker horse

I like it but It seems kind of small to me, I know they are suppose to be small but I can barely make it out. (Then again I'm practically blind)

  • I changed the color and make the lettering lighter, I think I like it better

  • Here's what I went with for my stable tattoo
    image

It seems to be good on most horses, I have a bay app with a big blanket that it looked funny because it landed on his spot, but I just put it on his shoulder
