What's the difference?

I was looking at horses on a search for some specific genes.
Is there any real difference between splash 1 and splash 2? So far I'm not really seeing any differences other than the different gene locations. -
I think splash 2 is a bit more "aggressive", it always seems to show up rather loudly, where splash 1 can be extremely subtle.
