I was on it last year and did "upgrade" but after a couple of weeks I gave up on it.

WHG started out with a more intricate showing/training system, with all different styles of western riding and a PT style testing, the more "points" a horse had in that style they were more likely to succeed. I played it a lot when it first came out but dropped off after Ammit stopped supporting it. The portrait system is a pretty old one, I think one of the original portrait programs Ammit came out with with the horse's whole body. It had the same colors and patterns and breed choices between QH, Paint, Pintaloosa, and Appaloosa.

Edit: oh and it had different attributes I think it evolved into that, intelligence, balance, cow sense, etc, a whole lot of them, then you had to use the horses abilities to figure out what style they best fit into. If my account is still around I would give it to you if Ammit would let me, but I doubt either is possible :P (WHG is blocked at my work, but hajinc isn't.... thanks IT?)
