Culling preferences for show horses
-
I feel pretty confidant spaying and gelding for the best breeding, however I have a hard time letting go of show horses and my barns fill up fast! I need to keep my barns smaller so I don't get overwhelmed and was wondering how you all determine which gelds/spays are worth keeping to show and which ones can be let go? Do you ditch anything below say a 9 PT score? Help me out! Thanks!
P.s. another reason for ditching lower horses is to keep my breeders lines uncluttered with not great offspring and keep their stats better, so I don't want too many show horses sitting around. -
I look at my show ponies that have leveled off. If they have very few points I send them to the auction or put them on the sales board.
As far as keeping breeders lines uncluttered. I know people who do this. I do not understand it. They are what they are. I feel that I need to know exactly what the high and the low range of the breeding potential is in order to better focus on the next generation.Thanked by 1calamitycowgirl -
If they test inconsistent, I frequently send anything with a PT under 10 to the auction. Otherwise, I usually hang onto them. Of course, I'm a pixel pony hoarder, which does pay off, even though I have to keep on adding barns to my stable. I've reached the point, though, where my showing bonus is enough that I can afford to buy IVs with which to buy additional barns.
If I sort my horses by lifetime points, the #5 horse on the list is an 18 year old 2nd gen intact mare with a PT of 9.4 and 3362.0 points as of today. Her lifetime profits are 9771 hbs. She just leveled up to 7L, and so is showing in the lower half of her class.
Number 11 on that list is an 18 year old gelding with a total of 2876.0 points. His profits are in the negative range, but since he brings in over 1000 hbs a week in showing bonus, I'm not especially worried about the negative profits. I will move him into a non-showing barn, though, since, at his age, he probably won't be around long enough to move out of the bottom of 7L.
Here's the search I did, if you'd like to see what's there.

I keep everything. And my showing bonus likes it.Post edited by Maribo at 2016-01-10 13:51:17ID 195859

:D Yep. I really keep almost everything and my showing bonus is enormous. Not the biggest in the game, I'm sure, but it's around three quarters of a million hbs per week. Pixel pony hoarding does pay off with the new showing system.Thanked by 1Redbud

I almost never pt or consistency test anything, so I can not put additional input there. I can say that I have some very good showers from C lines :D

I'm with Maribo. They pay for their barns the more I keep :D

Same here. I keep everything. I can afford to breed several thousand foals every season (if I want to) and purchase IVs to buy barns for them, just with my bonus alone.Imation Stud ID# 2609
