White factor could be the difference between a lethal combo between certain genes and coming out with a live foal.. Like Bravo said, the white factor dictates the amount of white a horse will have with genes like Sabino, Kit M, Tobiano, W2, ETC...

The White Factor Risk Chart will aid in combining genes that are risky and amplified by an excessive white factor.. Most players air on the side of caution and stay away from combing lethal genes... very few take the risk...

the safe(er) genes are green with the riskier genes being orange or red
and that's not to say that lethal combos wont happen with yellow... I've lost a foal in the advanced breeding lab before who's parents were Kit M, W3 for dad and Sab1 and W20 for mom... the only logical explanation is that the foal ended up with W3 and Sab1 with an excessive white factor...

The amount of white from any of the 3 Splash genes also is increased as the White Factor gets larger, so breeding horses with Kit White and Sabino genes and/or Splash can be dangerous.

Splash 1 is always safe with any other splash genes. Splash 2 and Splash 3 are homozygous lethal and lethal with each other. I don't remember about Splash M, but I think that also is save with any other splash in the game.
