Second gens and paper levels...
-
How do you deal with your lined horses and their paper levels?
Right now I have a pasture with 2nd gen red mares (dad is B and moms are red).. colts from the foundation parents have to be superior to dad and brothers but not a paper level higher so in doing so, I'm hoping to get 3rd gen A/Blues... but at this point in the game I've been itching to just obliterate that idea and anything coming from foundation parents HAVE to be a paper level higher in order to stay intact... I dont have the barn or pasture space to keep hoping for papered higher 3rd gens...
But in doing that, I would be nixing a lot of work when it comes to colors..
Basically I'm confused as to what I want to do and I would love to hear how others go about their papers and gens...Thanked by 1ChateauAlbere -
Only keeping gen2 blue mares is good, but you'll only get very low numbers. I keep all the reds but after a few foals you could go through them and spay the ones with the lowest AFPT. I mostly only accept A papered stallions for gen2, this at least means that gen3 foals have to be blue papered (or nearly depending on stallion) to pass SBAPost edited by Kintara at 2019-03-22 23:08:22

I require my 3rd gen stallions to be A and sup to sire; and my 3rd gen mares to be blue. I work with C/Yellow foundation stock for the most part, so 2nd gen stallions have to be B and superior to sire, and 2nd gen mares to be red.

With my main project, if I start culling now, I'll be snipping/nixing 23 horses... Leaving only 17 intact higher papered breeders.. it doesn't sound that bad given that only 3 of the 17 are A papered superior colts and 14 Blue mares since December when I started the project...

But then I look into the 2nd gen pasture and think... So many perfectly marked horses... Do I really want to spay/geld them...

I only breed exceptional producers to start with.
My 2G horses must paper A or Red/Blue and pass SBA. On occasion I will keep a superior to sire B if he’s perfect in every other way - also gives me an option to cross on my Red 2G mares.
3G must be A/Blue and pass SBA/test superior.
4G must be another superior to sire A or *Star. Mares must be Blue or *Gold.
5G must be *Star or *Gold.
Every horse is different though and as long as my horses all pass SBA and test superior to sire, I’m willing to give them a try to see how they produce.Thanked by 1ChateauAlbere -
My foundations are mostly Exceptional Producing Appaloosa or Exceptionally Perfect, I have very few yellow foundations and those are mostly for colour or fun. (Brindle create day, only got black appy that day so go with what I got). I've only boosted twice and that was to get just sup to sire ... I have bred to boosted stock, but not much of mine is. (couple of Secret Santa's that we way awesome).
I do all the testing (unless its an AI, and its a breeding I will never be able to do again ... then I will hold till I can boost to Sup if a colt or pass strict if a filly) If they pass then we break it down ... Colts need to be sup to sire and carry what I want (Appaloosa, has to be blanketed ... Snowflake 3rd gen needs the snowflake ect) If it is a breeding I can't do again and they are sup to sire I will hold onto them. Mares I'm a little looser on because you get fewer foals out of them, they have to pass testing, unless I'm swimming in mares, then I do a huge spay.
Most 3rd gens are A/Blue Sup to Sire ... again unless its a breeding I can't do again, then I will boost ... so far I only have one that I'm waiting to boost.
Most 4th gens are A/Blue too pass testing and colts Sup to sire. I do have some Star/Gold but its not required
Fifth gen needs to be Star/Gold and sup to sire pass all testing.
