Base colour dominance?
  • I understand the basics of the genetics on here, but I can never remember which base colours are dominant over what. I'm aware some base colours only need to be one copy to be dominant over another, but again my memory fails me on that too.

    Any help?
  • At the extension black (E) is dominant to chestnut (e). For example EE = black and Ee/eE = black and ee = chestnut. Agouti affects black based (E-) horses, the most dominant is wild bay (A+), then bay (A), then brown (At), then black (a). For example A+A = wild bay, but Aa = bay and only aa will = black.

  • So in general it's bay over black (unless it's aa with EE) then black over chestnut (unless ee and aa)? And what about grey? I have one horse Gg/EE/Aa so I take it Grey is dominant over black and bay?
  • Yes bay (A-) is dominant over black (aa) and black (E) is dominant over chestnut (e). Grey trumps all the colour genes; no matter what colour it is under the grey, the horse will be grey. For example, the horse you suggested is bay under the grey.

  • Great, thank you!
