A straw is from a stallion and is used to artificially inseminate either a mare (live cover) or a previously harvested egg to make an embryo. The embryo is then implanted into a brood mare to produce a foal. These procedures are carried out in the advanced breeding lab (under advanced facilities to the left of your screen). This is an expensive way of making a foal, I would strongly advise you to wait a while to get the hang of the game before using straws, if you are able that is.

Access to the Advanced Breeding lab begins with the Basic Upgrade. The Premium Upgrade adds to the features available to players there.

Free accounts can purchase straws but cannot use them. However, they will remain in the account's freezer and become usable if that player purchases a basic upgrade.

For very new accounts, unless you can afford to spend a fair amount of real-life money on the game, even buying straws is not the best investment of your limited game cash.

I see you just started playing at the beginning of this month. If I were you, I would spend several more months playing so that you can learn the ins and outs of this very complex game. Then, if you still find it fascinating and can afford it, switch to the basic upgrade and explore some of the more advanced features.
