Breeding advice
  • Is there a way to do comparison testing on fillies? And I am wondering if I could breed half siblings, or do I need to find a different stallion for my 2nd gen mares?
  • No comparison testing for mares, but AFPT is the best way to keep track of quality.
You can use whichever stallion you wish, there is no issue with using siblings, although keep a eye on which genes they have as some can be fatal homogeneous.
  • What is AFPT?

    Which genes are fatal?
  • AFPT = Average Foal PT

There is chart in this post showing which colour crosses are safe or risky

  • In addition to the kit genes explained in the link Kintara posted there are a few other genes to be careful with. Frame (Olw in the gene test) is always homozygous lethal. Splash 2 (PAX3C70Y) and Splash 3 (Sps3) are homozygous lethal and lethal in combination with each other. These splash genes are both limited edition genes, so you are less likely to encounter them, but they should be included in a complete listing of lethal genes. Splash 2 is only available by GMT or breeding to horse from a foundation line that was GMTed and splash 3 is only available in horses descended from the 3 million and 5 million horse milestone celebration stallions.
