Paper help
  • I'm wondering, is it possible to breed star and gold papered horses? If so what's the best plan if attack to do so?

Any and all help is appreciated !

  • Yes.
Start with good foundations that pass SBA and are papered C or B for stallions and Yellow/Red for mares.

Breed 2nd gen to 2nd gen from those foals.

Then breed third gen to 3rd gen.

Repeat with 4th gen and 5th generation.

I've started getting Star papered stallions at 4th/5th gen from regular foundation lines.
Gold papered mares at 4th/5th gen from regular foundation lines.

  • What Forestshadow said.

Always be looking to advance the line, not plateau it or move backwards. You want C->B->A->*Star and Yellow->Red->Blue->*Gold, recognizing that it can take two or three generations to get from blue to gold and from A to star.

Take advantage of all of the testing you can possibly use/afford. Use Stallion Comparison to make sure that any colts you keep intact are confirmed to be Superior to Sire.

There's nothing like that for mares so you have to hold onto them and breed them a few times to get an idea of how they stack up to their dams. Papering will ensure you're not moving backwards (though I would never keep a yellow-papered filly with a yellow-papered dam, and you can get blue from red though it can be tricky.) After 3-4 foals you should have enough to get a solid AFPT, and you want to make sure you have a big increase there over the previous generation. If your foundation AFPT is 10, you want your 2nd gen AFPT to be at least 10.5

And then you have to be dedicated. It takes a while, but it's soooooo satisfying when you finally hit it.

  • I agree, never keep yellow papered foals from foundation mares, and never keep foals that paper worse than their dams. If foundation mare is yellow, I will accept 2 generation reds, 4th gen must be blue, and I will also accept 5th gen blue. 6th gen mares must paper gold.

All my boys must be superior to sire.

  • I'm still very new so I don't quite understand how the generations work.... Can someone explain them to me?

  • Generations are how many horses are behind the horse. It’s easier to guess at the quality if each mare and stud has the same number of horses on the family tab evenly in rows. (And similar quality ie. same range of paper levels in each vertical row)

Foundation are your create horses and they have no horses on the family tab.

If you breed two of those you have 2nd generation foal that has 1 line of horses on their family tab.

If you breed 2 of those together you get 3rd generation and on the family tab you will have the first row of 2 and the second vertical row of 4 horses filled.

I’d you breed 2 - 3rd Gen together you’ll get 4th Gen and you will have a full page of horses on the family tab.

I use a letter after my horses prefix to indicate generations so I don’t have to check to see what it is and I can continue to breed evenly after the 4th Gen. There’s a link on the family tab you can also use to view the full pedigree of the horse.

An unevenly bred horse is when you breed a horse with more horses on their family tab to another horse that doesn’t have any or fewer horses on the family tab. The foal will have “foundation horse” in the same vertical row as actual descendants.
