How did you cull ?
-
I'm seriously considering going through my breeding stock, but I'm having trouble.
I feel like I want a change, but I'm having a hard time letting my old lines go.
I already have an idea of what I want to breed, color wise, and I really would love to have just cobs/drafts, but my favorite older lines aren't that.
It's mostly my old breeding lines that I'm having issues with. I've had those the longest. One of those is my sire line from a friend's MAB foundation mare.
Basically, I am being sentimental.
How should I handle it? -
Don't do anything at all with them for a season. Don't spay/geld, just don't breed. See how you feel the following month.
-
I blend my new cob/drafts into my old lines. Takes some time, but so worth it!
-
I do what visions does. You may not get the size for a while, but if you can get the quality they will get there. I am going from RH size to DR so I know it's going to be a long journey, but I'm not willing to lose those ones just yet.

When I had very nice foundations of a different build than what I wanted to specialize in, I created draft and cob mares to breed them to.
Now that we can GMT bone if there was a superior son, who did not get as much bone as I wanted, I did GMT him to be the heaviest he could be.
I am just now getting 4th gen heavy stallions into my KP and Satin lines. So, I took the time to cull a slew of older, lighter mares that have already left their mark on my lines and sent them to the show barn.
With breeding season every month and not every other, you will be able to do this much quicker than I was able to.

Thanks for the input. I do need to do some culling on my 2nd gen mares, but I think I'll leave those older lines intact since I was able to get a 5th gen Star draft stallion from my newer lines.
