You can't add genes to him that his parents don't have. If you want to buy GP or Pearl from the RGS, it has to go on a foundation horse with no foals.

A foundation horse has no named parents in the game, so its gene set can be altered to suit its creator (or subsequent purchaser), as long as it has no living offspring.

A lined horse, on the other hand, does have named parents in the game (even if their names may still be an ID number) and so, as in real life, its gene set is based on the gene set of its two parents. Just as real horses that do not carry the Kitto, tobiano, gene will not and cannot produce a tobiano foal, so horses in the game are likewise restricted, and we are not allowed to add any gene. We can only add genes that one of the parent horses carry and which the foal did not get.
