Interest in lined Grullo Mares?
  • Here at Pontikka we specialize in Grullos with colour and have lines of KP, Axiom, Nexus and Plaid.

Like many large barns we feel the rush of time and as such over the last real life year or two we have embarked on a journey of organization and reduction.

We started with the show horses and decided that 5000 at any one time would be sufficient for our stables income.

We also dedicated ourselves to the organizing and tattooing of all of our horses so that choosing which horses we allow to be sold or leave our barn would be easier.

We use several tattoos to mark intact horses to differentiate between horses who’s pedigrees are completely our own, who have outside lines 1, 2, or 3 generations back and those who have outside lines somewhere in the pedigree that are not showing on the family tab.

The show horses are marked with 2 tattoos stating that their parents are Pontikka owned or not. Those that were bred by us get the BAZ tattoo and are sold off between the ages of 10-15.

Once we had good start on the show horses we turned to the studs to reduce the number of colour crop out foals automatically getting sent to the show barns.

This weekend in a Harry Potter and Downton Abby Netflix marathon we completed the tattooing of our entire show horse herd and the 10+ year old intact horses.

With only 45 pages of horses left to tattoo (which may sound like a lot but I started with 263 pages yesterday morning) we now set our eyes towards our intact mares and the issue of how many do we really need and what to do with the ones that are not quite right for our program.

Normally when we have finished using a mare we would just alter her and send her to a show barn to live out the rest of her life but as we normally just alter the old mares we end up not having enough space for the young upcoming mares to fit into the pastures.

So we are turning to the public to ask the questions:

Would there be interest in Grullo pedigreed lines horses?

What pricing would be reasonable? (not to cheap. Not too expensive)

Would it be better to auction off mares or just add them to a buddy chat to be picked through and altered before reaching 4 years old. (As once the initial cull was over only the under age horses would be sold going forward)

To see the sort of horses to be sold I’ve included links below of the 3 groups of horses that would most likely be culled first. Not all the horses in the links will be candidates of leaving my barns as I still have the 40 pages of intact horses to tattoo which will eliminate some from being sold.
