Only getting show horses from top stud
  • So I have a pretty nice stud, an exceptional producing champagne: www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=7906417

However, every time I've breeded him (nearly 10 times with all different mares), I get breeding advice that the horse would be a better show horse. None of his foals are breeding potential, according the the breeding advice.

If he is such a good stud, why am I getting this advice? How can I get good breeding foals from him too? Is it that the mares aren't good enough? Even the show horses I do get from him, they aren't that great. I compared him to another stud that I had and he's definitely better.

  • Are you breeding with red papered mares? If so you might just be having an off season with him and his foals aren't better then both parents

  • Post links to your boy and a couple of the mares and we can give you better advice, though sometimes it really is just plain old bad luck. 10 isn't a large enough sample to be certain he is a poor stud, and even show quality foals/horses won't be their best until they level off in their training. Plus, foals don't train at all.

  • If you are using mares that are not from exceptional producers make sure they have 30 days in the pasture to optimize your chances of intact foals.

BA compares the foals and they need to be close or better than the better parent to stay intact. If you use yellow mares with him (most non exceptional are yellow rather than red) there’s more of a spread between the parents and the foal has to be that much better to stay intact

  • Thanks for the advice! I think it's just a mix of bad luck/yellow paper mares.

I am also very new to the game, so that's probably why I'm not getting fantastic foals quite yet.
  • There are normally a ton of Exceptional Producing mares up for sale at 2500 from the Foundation Rescue. Generally its the boring colors but they will help get you more intacts from this stud. Also, get those mares into the pasture and allow them to breed on their own in the pasture with him. That is the best way to get more intacts.

All my foundie studs go into pasture to breed my foundation mares - some are expro, some are not, most are red papered but I also have yellow papered mares in there that can produce intacts in the pasture.

  • @newmag1659
I have a lot of exceptional warmblod mares I could give you for 1 hb each, if you are interrested. Unfortunatly, I don't breed drafts, so I don't have any of those, but if you keep the draft foals, you will end up with a nice draft herd :)

  • Try using exceptional producers / red papered mares. You would most likely have alot better luck using them. :)
