If they arent boosted, then they are cloaned.
Some people like taking off certain tattoos (I for one don't like seeing all of the GMT tattoos on my horses... reminds me of how dead I am if my husband finds out lol)

I take off a lot of tattoos, I don't like them much. I try to leave significant ones on there though, like if I boost a foundation, or to remind me of what I have added, but the first nacre stallion must have been boosted so likely lost his tattoo along the way, maybe when I removed something else

That all makes sense. Weird to me that they show up as era 7 still though; I always thought they got an era handicap for being exceptional producing or boosted.

I would expect 10% to trigger it, LOL.

They used to go up an era when boosted, HJ2 never has, and at some stage HJ1 changed to not going up an era when boosted. If cloning though you still get the boost penalty and they go up an era. In saying that, the nacre boy of mine might not have a full 5% boost, and the 10% boosted boy just might be a glitch!
