How do you cull mares?
  • It’s so hard to cut down my mares when I start thinking of the color possibilities... how do you choose which mares to spay and add to the show herd?

  • I know what I am breeding for. So that makes it easier. I breed for a specific color and PT. So that is getting me to a point where culling is easier now.

  • @RoseRedFarm That makes sense! I’m still in the phase of amazement at every color combo I get, so I’m not sure exactly what I want to work towards, yet. I’ve made a weak effort at culling “boring” mares, so far.

  • Oh I completely understand! When I first started I wanted everything in every color! Now I am aiming for:

    -Liver Club
    -Kit Promoter Club
    -White M Club

  • So this is how i cull my mares:
    1. Strict Breeding Advice on everything (but if you don't have a premium upgrade, obviously you can't do this)
    2. Paper everything. Mares must paper as followed:
2G - Red (I do occasionally get some Blue papered 2G's)
    3G - Blue
4G - Blue, with some Gold sprinkled in from certain lines
    5G+ - Gold
I make no exceptions. If they do not paper this way, they are immediately snipped.
    3. Genes - I have several lines and if the fillies to not get the genes i am breeding for in a specific line, they get the snip. Even if they pass the above two steps, they have to have the specific genes from the line to stay intact. So if i have a second generation pasture of chinchilla horses, the resulting third gen Blue fillies must have at least one copy of chinchilla to stay intact, regardless of any other genes they may possess.
    4. Will I really use them? If i have a filly that i think is absolutely gorgeous but misses out on the genes i want, i have to decide if i really have somewhere for her to go or if i should cut my losses and snip. I usually always end up snipping.

But the best part is that there is no wrong way to play! A lot of people cull based on consistency and PT scores as well but i personally don't bother. You can cull based on criteria that fit your breeding goals and you can change your rules as you go :) I did a massive cull spree a couple seasons ago where i snipped hundreds of mares (474 to be exact) because i decided to make my cull criteria stricter in order to make room for my newer lines.

  • @RoseRedFarm @HayesStable
Thank you both for your insight! Sounds like I need to think hard on what I want from my horses and then act on it! I’ve got some work to do :D
