GMTing and Boosting (need advice)
  • I created this mare the other day that I’m in love with and I’ve been thinking hard about possibly turning her into my first project horse. image

What I would like to do is change her into a stallion, add KitM, and boost her to B papered. As someone who’s never done this before, I have a few questions! First one would be: Do you need two copies of kit m for it to show and pass onto offspring? And the second one is: much would it take to make B papered and is it worth it?
  • She is gorgeous, congrats!
For your first question: Nope, you only need one copy! KitM appears on and can be passed from a heterozygous parent :D

I'll leave your second question to someone more knowledgeable about boosting :)

  • A 5% boost is 200 IVs, so it's quite the investment.

It isn't easy, but it is possible to find Liver B papered foundation stallions that you wouldn't have to do any GMTing or boosting.

  • With boosting foundations: it’s kind of luck of the draw. I’ve had ones where I threw a 1% boost and they’ve jumped straight to B and others that haven’t until 3 or 4% boosts. I assume that some won’t jump even with 5%.
  • @peachtree, thank you! that’s relieving \:D/ I was definitely hoping I could keep this little project under $40 :))
@johara I had no idea they were that expensive, wow. I suppose I could always use real money? But I do think I’ll have to search for a B papered liver chestnut for the next week or two. Unfortunately she’s already four, so I’ll have to decide before the end of the month.
@nikkel666 Thank you! I’ve heard about horses that are high/low versions of their paper? I wonder if I could figure out if she’s low quality yellow or higher quality yellow to see where my risk is. Is there a real breeding difference between a C Foundation stallion and a B Foundation stallion?
  • She passed BA so she'd boost to red/B easily enough. Do you have SBA? if she also passed that you'd know she's nearly a red

  • If you are going to spend real money on boosts though, and want a B paper, it might be worth waiting until DP comes into the RGS and put it on something you like that is already B papered?

  • I don’t have SBA because I’m a basic upgrades account, unfortunately. What I was really looking for was a liver chestnut kit m line, I already have a few liver chestnut mares I could use- Adding DP to a horse I already like isn’t going to get me exactly what I’m looking for (excuse me if I’m wrong! New to learning these genetics)

I’m debating changing her, breeding soon to be him to a few mares and seeing if they produce red/b foals (then yumming the foals of course). Since that’s all I really want, if I can get that then I don’t really see the need to buy boosts?
  • Well if he was boosted to B obviously he'd be better than a C and have a better chance at producing red/B, but you can get some red/B from C papered too

  • Just to do the math: two copies of DP costs the same in IVs as a +5% boost, so if you get a stallion from an Exceptional Producing HH, he will already be B-papered, and you can add one or two copies of DP on him + KitM and save 200 IVs by not boosting at all.

In the gene sale, I think two copies of DH is way cheaper than a +5% boost, so it would save you money there as well to make a Exceptional stallion :)

  • If you just change her to a stallion and GMT her, and use pasture breeding, you will still have a good chance of getting Red/B offspring from your herd
  • Thank you, Herzeloyde and Kintara!
I think I’ve come up with a plan. From now until around the end of the month I plan on searching for a B papered liver chestnut foundation stallion that I can gmt. If I can’t find a good stallion, I may leave the one I have now as a C stallion and add one copy of kit m- then use the pasture boosts to help produce red/b. I think that might be the least expensive option. The DP thing is an excellent idea, I’m debating on doing that for a different project I have in mind. Thanks guys!
  • @BlueBoy I heard that they changed it so that you can GMT at any age?

  • You can gmt any age, but you can only boost if they are 4yo and under
