  • I’m one of the many that still haven’t mastered understanding and eyeing dp- curious if this little guy is? Thx!

  • I doubt it. He looks like a pretty standard amber champagne to me, and neither of his parents are shouting DP! at me either.

  • Seconding @Natalya. I'm not great with champagnes but his dam definitely isn't DP, so at most this little guy is het by his sire. Checking the sire's foals, some of the chestnuts look kind of dark for SSty or SS, but it looks like if they got DP it was from the dam.

This foal alone makes me question, because for a SS chestnut she's awfully dark.

This (that foal's dam) is the color I typically expect from an SS chestnut. I would guess the little one has a copy of DP, which in this case would have to be from the sire, so perhaps he's het. Maybe someone else could weigh in. There aren't that many foals so it's tricky to tell.

BUT! Disclaimer, I'm not super great with horses without sooty, so take all of that with a grain of salt. It's really difficult to tell with champagnes, so it's hard to give a definitive answer. Hope some of this was helpful :) good luck!

  • If the sire does have DP, which I debated, I don't think the colt got it
This is an SS amber mare with, I'm pretty sure, no DP

Disclaimer- I don't actually have an ironclad assurance about the DP status of any of those mares, I'm having trouble finding any I've gotten confirmed.

As for the sire... He could be DP actually, now that I'm looking closer (and am more awake)
Compare these gold champagnes- the first is SS, the second SstyS, and the third SstySsty (the same disclaimer about DP confirmation applies here)

    I'd say the sire:

looks closest to that second one, despite having pangare that would hypothetically lighten him a little. So I wouldn't be surprised if he has DP, actually. But I don't think the colt got it.

And all these are guesses, champs can vary a lot!

  • Also, I second @Peachtree on that filly. She about had to have gotten DP from somewhere

Also also, DP can be super sneaky! I found out just yesterday that this mare, whom I've had for nearly a year, is het DP (the appaloosa varnish is making her a lot lighter, btw. Look at the spots on her rump)

She threw me for a loop with a liver foal by a stud that I know doesn't have DP!

  • Interesting. Thank you both sooo much! Really appreciate the info and time. Its too bad it doesnt come up someway to confirm, like on breeders clubs- but I guess that adds to illusion and fun of it all!
    Thanks again. :)>- ^:)^
