Changing standards
  • Finally got some quality computer time this weekend and have been powering through about 4 months backlog of foal sorting.

I typically test SBA, performance and genes through the barn page then cull (geld or spay only. I keep most of my horses and sell off older show horses when I have time to sit down and list them in my buddy chat) for inconsistency and colour. Next I paper everyone

I breed grullos with patterns (KP, axiom, nexus and plaid) along with an assortment of white patterns.

Historically I would then go through and add prefixes to all my mares and sort them into their generations breeding barn or pasture and be done with them.

Next I would comparison test all my colts against their sires before adding their prefixes and sorting them into their barns (I usually go through each of my sires and trim their sons down to 3 through various methods)

But with the introduction of mare comparison testing this is really the first time I’ve done some extra culling with my mares in a long time. I’d previously gone through my older mares when it first came out and comparison tested the first few oldest age brackets against their Dams but have now gotten all my 14+ year old mares tested.

Then I realized that one of the things I try to do before comparison testing my colts is to go through my studs and snip the lower papered colts but I haven’t looked through my mares when doing this so I changed tactics and have started going through my studs and snipping the lower paper level of both the colts and fillies. Once through the last 4 pages of studs I’ll continue comparison testing my mares. Hopefully it won’t take long to get through the last 13 seasons of mares and going forward both the mares and studs will be tested the same.

I quite enjoy sorting and altering horses and can’t wait to thin the herd some more and know going forward my horses quality will be better than it has been and that mare lag won’t be such a gap (although I’ve only been testing mares against their dam but not snipping their line so I know it will take a little while longer for my mare lag to sort itself out)

  • It's a good feeling isn't it!? My barn on this server is not that big, but the HJ2 barn is plenty big enough for me to handle, and I was getting a bit frustrated about mare lag!

  • I’m the opposite. This server is huge. Nearly 1000 foals a month now that it’s down to 1 month seasons.

On Hj2 until recently I only had my primary pasture and kept getting so busy dealing with these foals I kept forgetting to switch mares around. My 3rd+ generations are struggling to get 10 mares a piece so sorting goes right quick over there.

But I have always loved to cull my breeding stock and really love that I can nitpick even more now
