Number of Foals
  • Trying to feel out the community and see if there is a general consensus on how many foals is too many for a stallion. I keep most of my lines in barn, and I could honestly care less about linebreeding/inbreeding since I don't sell anything to anyone intact anyways. That being said, my oldest foundie stud has over 100 babies. Does the community care and should I trade him out with something else, or does it matter?
  • I dont think it is a big deal how many foals a stallion has. If you do not want to keep him for your own lines then I would geld him or sell. But if you still wanted to make some cash but keep him in your herd then place him for stud.

  • Nah, I never really looked at how many foals a stud has. I know a few studs who are actually very famous and widely used.
The only reason I would trade is because I want to incorporate other genes in my lines. But right now I have 3 B papered foundations, 1 C papered foundation (Who for the last 2 season ahs capped out at 50 foals a season but that doesn't mean I kept them all, some were sold back), I have 2 or 3 B papered 2g foundations, 2 or 3 A papered 2G studs, and about 2 A papered 3G studs. I will rotate them until they age out but all of them are relatively young. So I don't see it being a bad thing that he has foaled over 100 babies! If you like what he's producing, keep going! otherwise you can always find another stud you like :)

  • My GMT’d foundation studs all have several hundred foals by the time they pass so that I can spread their special genes throughout my herds.

Although I do alter my foals strictly so a good portion of them are in my show barns.

  • Most of my stallions have 20 or less before I switch them out with a different stallion.. since I've tighten my breeding programs, I'm keeping at most 3 foals from each stallion as they have to test superior and then they have to have most if not all the genes for that breeding plan...
