Why Bay not Brown?
  • Created this mare today and not sure why she is bay not brown?

  • Because the horse is a bay. Brown is just a dark variant of bay. Just like a horse is only a liver if they are dark enough, not just because they have DP.

  • Gotcha so just because genetics says E/= tt doesn't mean they are going to show as brown they may show as bay.

  • They have darkening genes. This horse has none.

  • Also, my understanding is that hom brown (At/At) do not come out brown. Only het brown will actually be a "brown" horse. Hopefully that also answers your question :) I bred for brown horses for a bit and it is tricky because they are recessive like that.

  • Yes this post is almost a month old now but for future reference for possible new players...

    A(t)a = brown
    A(t)A(t), A(t)A+, A(t)A = Bay

  • Hom browns are brown if they have sooty, like the True Breeding Brown Appaloosa HH

  • Ok, you guys made me curious, so I applied some creative searching to the issue and here's what I figured out:

A(t)a = brown, regardless of darkening genes

A(t)A(t) with at least one darkening gene, either sooty or DP = brown (fun fact- at the time of this writing there are exactly 100 horses in the game who are A(t)A(t) brown with no sooty, because they have DP. This would have been a thing to figure out before DP got added to the gene testing, lol, since it would confirm the presence of DP in those horses)

A(t)A(t) with no darkening genes = bay

And an A or A(+) in there makes bay

  • A(t) and A or A(+) being bay makes sense, since they're dominant to A(t). A(t)A(t) not being brown if they don't have darkening genes but A(t)a being brown without darkening genes seems weird and I'm not entirely certain I understand why.

  • I guess like cream or splash, one copy has a different effect than two copies?

  • That is exactly it. One copy removes some black, but two copies removes more black. Wild bay removes the most black.
