Would you take the gamble?
  • I have a good number of horses that are able to age out the next season. Many do not have a whole bunch of points so I plan to auction them as even if they did survive the rollover I still wouldn't get much out of them for another month.

At what point do you see if they will survive and take the gamble? The highest I have makes 271 hbs a day. That's an extra 8000 if they survive. Or 0 if they don't. Or even more if they keep surviving?

How old do you let them try to be before auctioning to try to maximize hbs?
  • When browsing the horse list earlier I saw some players with a lot of aged 21 horses, but other than that my oldest horse is 4 so I cannot help.

Personally, I would probably auction off anything that won't make 2500 if it survives another year - although I do not know the probability of death.

  • I usually keep my horses until they age out, very rarely would I sell a show horse unless they just really aren't placing well and costing me tons of money.
I usually take the chance and hold on to them, if they pass away there's usually no (or very little) wasted money on them, and if they happen to survive roll-over then there ya go! an extra 8000 a month

  • I also don’t auction old horses but if you really need the money now I’d look at how much they bring in verses how much they cost to show 2x a week. If they don’t make enough to cover their costs send them on their way but if you don’t need the money or the stall space right now keep them around and maybe you’ll get lucky and get another $8,000 out of them.

The cost of showing is super low the highest level horses cost $140/week and therefore only needs about 187 total points (20hbs / day pay out)

  • Honestly, I think it kind of depends where you are in your growth cycle. At the moment, I still have to very actively manage my stock for space reasons. During the last week of every month, I sort all non-pastured horses older than 9 by earnings this month and auction everyone that is placing at the bottom of their classes/not earning points.
The the poorly performing 17 year olds would get caught up in that. I'm at the point where space isn't such an issue that I can't take that gamble with the top performers though.

  • I agree with ChateauBere, it depends on where you are currently. I do the same thing as Chateau if I need more space I cull more poorly preforming show horses, if I need more $$ I cull the bad show horses and turn around and invest in pointed creates or FR horses who are winning 50+ points a month. If you invest everything you earn from selling the poor show horses, into new younger show horses you will usually see a jump in your daily payout.

What I do is towards the last half of the month I go through all my show horses over 9(and leveled off), starting with the oldest and search ‘total points this year‘, and auction anybody earning less than 20 points halfway through the month gets auctioned. I start with the oldest because they are the ones who if they aren’t earning anything will lose their value the quickest, if I don’t have the time to cull the younger horses it would be less of a loss to cull them next month. Every stall I empty gets filled by another show horse, and I rarely use the $$ I get off of auctioning show horses on anything but new show horses. I do keep old horses if they’re still earning 50-100ish points a month they are worth the gamble to me.
  • I need to do a show herd cull on this server in the worst way, I tend to keep anything that makes it into a show barn. That said on Forrest where I am no longer adding barns a show horse has to make 36 dollars a day or better to play the rollover lotto.
  • I auction every 17 year old that has under 1000 points. Some seasons I am too busy and forget but that is my cutoff. I have waay too many horses to be keeping them all around.
I chose this cutoff as I want them to pay more than what they deliver in auction (2500) + a little bit extra. However, I also look at how they show. If they have over 1000 points but are dead last in their class they wont make me any more money so they will go too to make room for new horses.
