So my friend and I are having a debate, and who could be better to settle a genetics question than the HAJ community? ;)

So basically, I want to breed my (real life) Grey Mare to a pearlino stallion. My mare is out of a homozygous grey, and by a bay stallion. So I would say she is heterozygous, correct? The stallion is tested gg. My friend says this means he carries Grey, but it is not expressed. I always thought that meant they didn’t carry grey, and that grey would always show up if they had it. If I’m correct I have a 50% chance of grey, but my friend thinks I will 100% get a grey. What are your thoughts?

I don’t know if this is correct, but I believe the stallion carries the recessive grey gene, not the dominant gene, so I believe it would be 50% chance of grey? I am not a geneticist, so do not listen to me unless what I say is confirmed.

From Wikipedia:

"The gray gene (G) is an autosomal dominant gene. In simple terms, a horse which has even one copy of the gray allele, regardless of other coat color genes present, will always become gray."

The Perlino stallion tested hom recessive grey, meaning he does not carry a copy of the grey gene to pass on. If your mare is het grey (Gg) - which it sounds like she is since she has a non-grey sire - then I'd say your chaces at a grey out of the cross are 50% :)
