Figuring out which horses are losing hb, and, auction button not there.
  • I've been trying to figure out a simple way to figure out how to decide which horses to get rid of because they're losing money.

Calculate the year's cost of entering shows, then calculate the year's daily payouts. (Is this daily x 30 or daily x 365?). If the cost of entering shows is higher than the hb winnings, move the horse to a "do not show" barn if you want to use it for breeding, cull it if its losing hb.

I've noticed each time I cull some a bunch of losers, my daily bonus increases much faster than without doing this.

I'm sure there are better ways, I've been hunting in the forums but no luck.

    And..
Why when I want to auction some horses, some of them, the "auction" button doesn't show up. refreshing doesn't fix it, reloading the page doesn't fix it.
    For example, this horse:

    Do you see the button?

  • The auction is currently running and not taking entries right now. Try auctioning when it is open. :)

  • I can feel my cheeks heating up over that. You can probably fry an egg on them.

    Thank you muchly.
  • I make sure my horses are shown twice a week.
Then in the second half of the month I’ll do a form search based on age starting with the oldest 18+ to my 10yr olds. I will then do Advanced Search- points this year. Then starting at the end of the search, I put an A in the beginning of every horse’s name who has earned less than 20 points this game year, on a game year I’m really desperate for space I may even cull up to the horses earning 30 points in a game year, but I try not to do that too often.

All my show horses names start with Zz so when I put the A In front of their name; later I can go back and in the barns sort by name and mass select them then put them in the auction, it saves a lot of time for me to do it that way.

ExampleI of my older show horses. I will cull numbers 92-122

  • By "Cull" you mean sell/auction? (just want to make sure i understand this.)
  • Currently, I have been tagging them with their lifetime payout, and then if that goes down, when it hits 2500, I get rid of the horse unless I want to breed him/her. That's the only way that seemed simple to me. mind you, comparing the horses years hb payout to their bh years cost only takes one trip to the horse, would want to repeat the marginal ones a bit later.

I have a feeling neither of these ways of mine are not very useful.

  • wow, looking at what you're getting rid of, I'm actually interested in a clone. a clone would come out as as in intact foal at age one?
  • This is honestly way more work than you need to be doing. As long as a horse is gaining enough points per year it is worth keeping.

  • for show horses ;If your Daily Payout x2 is more than the cost to show them x2 ( every week twice ) then they are earning you money
    if not they aught to be culled ;
Breeding Horses are there to be bred ; you ll earn more from the foals they produce then from their daily payout over time ; especially if you keep them in pasture for the foal bonus so i dont cull them til they age out

  • Cull for me means straight to the auction, selling takes too long, and it fluctuates on what people are looking for.

The way I’m doing it I only have to look through my horses once a month. Truthfully I don’t look at lifetime payout much. It was the reason I started culling this way to begin with, but I don’t use that as a factor in who I cull or don’t, I’ve culled horses with a 15k+ lifetime payout because they weren’t earning any points anymore, so I got the 15k in pocket to go look for a new better show horse. I spay/geld everything I don’t want to breed, that way they earn bonuses in training. I also try to have a minimum of a 3/1 ratio but have had a 9/1 ratio of show horses to breeding stock, and I currently have a 6.75/1 ratio, the higher the ratio the easier it is to breed, buy barns and GMT in one season without running out of hbs.

I’m a bit confused how you jumped from looking at the horses I’m culling to clones? Mind explaining that a bit further?

Clones always come out as yearlings, and have the same breeding ability as their parents from what I understand. You can only clone a horse you bred.

  • No useful insights from me, 'Daily Bonus From Points - 3312 hbs' and my ratio of show to breeders is probably 1:1 or 1:1.5 as I started my breeding herd first.

  • Not sure why I thought about cloning... now that I look back, it doesn't seem any reasoning to it.

Ammit, how do I figure how many points that is?
  • @OopsDotCom Silverstar gave you a good reference of 20 or 30 points per year.

  • I apologize, yes Silverstar did. It kinda went over my head, but I've read it a couple more times and it's beginning to let me understand it.
  • The auction says not running, now accepting..." yet I don't have the auction button. what do I need to do?
  • oops wrong window

  • thank you to everyone who took the time to help me out. I reaqlly appreciate it, and learned lots as you went through it for me.
  • Until the horse has levelled off, you don't really know well it's going to make you money. I mean they will all make you some money if they are still gaining points, but high PT's can take a while to do that. But they are still worth keeping as the payouts can be much higher. So as long as you have the space it's better to keep them.
After 10yo, or when they have levelled off for the higher PT's, you can better work out if they are worth keeping or if they are better off being sold for their lifetime payout. Once they have levelled off they don't gain much so mostly stay in the class that they levelled off in. If they are consistently last in that class it might be worth selling for lifetime payout, as they won't gain many more points. Horses that level off near the top of their class are definitely worth keeping, they continue to gain really good points.
If you don't understand all that just get a couple of weeks into a year, so they have shown a few times, then search your older horses on for Points This Year.
