Actually they can be shown as foals, but training won't do anything for them until they turn 2. There is not much point in showing foals though since the results are pretty much random, depending entirely on the other foal in the class. The winner only gets 0.5 points and the system that keeps track of the horses' lifetime points only counts whole points.
