How do YOU decide what to keep?
-
Hello! I'm pretty new to the game still, but thanks to a really nice donation from Johara, i've got a lot of HB to play around with! So I've been making horses left and right, because they're pretty and seeing the breeding outcomes is fun.
However... I've already hit my stall limit! That probably doesn't surprise anyone, haha. I can buy another barn with the HB I have, but stall space seems to be at a premium, and I'm going to probably keep filling it up unless I curb my horse-buying habits a little.
So here's the crux of the issue: how do you decide which horses to keep? Is it based on PT scores? Genes? Appearance? Do you breed for one particular trait and ignore all the rest? Is it something else I haven't even mentioned or discovered yet?
A related side question, that you don't have to answer if it's not something you want to share: how much IRL currency do you spend on H&J, if at all? I rarely find myself with extra income to spend on games, so 95% of my gaming is of the free-to-play variety. But it's possible H&J is structured to depend on an assumption that people will be spending IRL currency to truly enjoy the game to its fullest. I'd just like to hear people's experiences! :) -
Deciding which horses to keep is very dependent on which variables you are looking at. For example, at the moment I am looking at PT scores, # of points, and age to decide which horses I keep as show ponies; all of my breeding goals have kind of lost their attraction during my long absence so I am slowly figuring out what I want to aim for for my next breeding goal.
As for the IRL currency -vs- free-to-play variety, I am 100% free-to-play as I do not see a lot of sense for me to spend IRL currency on something I'll probably change my mind about within a few weeks time.
My experience has been that there is no "right way" to play, so it's really whatever you want it to be. :)Thanked by 1doragon -
I absolutely agree that there is no "right" way to play and that's what makes it fun. However, starting out it can lead to a bit of analysis paralysis (at least it did for me).
I sort of started out by experimenting with the herd helpers to find gene combinations I really liked the look of and browsed through the sale pages on the forum to see what other people were doing. From there I picked out two main combinations that I knew I really liked and didn't involve too many rare or fantasy genes. That way, if I changed my mind it wouldn't be the end of the world to start from scratch. I'm now keeping horses that are increasing in breeding quality (paper level, comparison testing) and have all of the genes that I want them to.
I'm also trying to keep a bunch of horses that have points and/or high PT scores so that I can grow my daily showing bonus to pay for testing and new barns.
I have spent some real life money on the game but mostly just at the beginning to buy some bigger barns and pastures so that I could expand more quickly and now mostly for the gift exchange. I completely agree that it is possible to have lots of fun without spending real life money.

I agree there is no "right way play." The best advice I can offer is to save up show ponies because they will end up being your money makers. That's definitely something I wish I found out sooner because for a while I wasn't really earning enough to support my breeding habits. :-))
I've been playing for a few years and have only recently decided my breedings goals. It took time because there are so many gene combinations that I hard time just picking one, and it's fine to not have one specific goal. I know some players have a few different lines they breed for.
It's 100% possible to play without using IRL currency. I did for a long while and was able to save up enough game money to get the IVs for a basic upgrade and extra barns. It never bothered me that I didn't have any "fancy" genes because I really enjoy the genetics of the game. If you really would like a fantasy gene the ammit sometimes has special events where you can use game currency to purchase IVs which can the be used to get gmts to be used in the lab. Or if you really have enough saved every 100,000hbs equals to $1.00 of IRL money. So. For a $5.00 gene you could offer someone 500,000hbs to get it added for you.Thanked by 1doragon -
As stated by everyone before, there is no right way to play. However, I have a way that I like to play haha. For me, some things are very black and white.
I never keep anything uneven, yellow or c papered, anything that fails SBA, anything with a PT below 10.00, any kind of pony (cob/sp/rp), or anything without a copy of DP or Champagne. When I say I don't "keep", I mean these horses go into my show/auction barn where they sit until the barn is full, then they get sent to auction, and the cycle repeats. You could argue that I'm losing money from not keeping show ponies but, if they come from the pasture (500 hbs) and I test them for SBA and they fail (free) and they sell at auction for a minimum of 2.5k, that's 2k in profit per pony.
In terms of more nitpicky stuff, Lined colts have to paper A. I think if they aren't *Star papered by 5th/6th gen I'll make a rule but I haven't gotten there yet. Lined fillies have to paper at least Red, and must be Blue papered by gen 3. As with colts I'll probably make a rule about when they should start papering *Gold but I haven't gotten there quite yet.
I have set a 60 foundation mare cap on myself, all of them are ExPerf and eventually, that foundation barn will all be DP and or Champagne carriers. I limit myself to 60 because 1, I don't need to buy more barns to keep more, and 2, it forces me to use outside mares once they've been bred for the season.
In terms of IRL spending, I tend to only ever do that on Foundations, but if there's a lined foal that I reallyreally want to boost or modify to fit my lines, then usually I give into the temptation :))
I have plenty of older quality mares I'd be more than happy to let you have, just let me know.
All in all, figure out what you want to breed for, there's no right or wrong way to play. There is a market in this game but the market is always changing and the entire point is to relax and have fun :)Post edited by Elfwood at 2021-02-23 12:13:12Thanked by 1doragon -
Regardless of how you play, show ponies are your bread and butter. Breeding is obviously the more fun part of this game, but the show ponies support that fun. Definitely keep your breeding herd small until you get a solid income.
I see that you have posted on this thread, but I highly recommend you scroll up to the very first post and thoroughly read the original post. It's some super solid advice.

I play on two different servers and pick a few "hard and fast" color rules for my breeding stock on each server and make myself stick to them regardless of how pretty and shiny the horses may be. On both servers I breed for light boned and start with ExPro/ExPerf foundations. I do not keep anything C/Yellow papered or inconsistent. On Mesa I look for horses are ee sty sty with DP and here its Ee/EE sty sty with silver. I really like having the different goals on different servers, it helps keep my mind organized and keep both lines in check and prevents me from collecting alllll the RS.
I also really try to focus on increasing the quality of my horses with each generation so that plays a huge factor in which horses I alter. I started out by keeping everything that passed SBA and was "consistent" intact, once I got more funds I started comparison testing and only keeping superior intact. If I find I have to many horses I just make another rule (i.e. bump the paper level requirements or add another gene requirement)
As far a spending real money, I highly recommend to at least get the new player special for the basic upgrade. I think it's 1.99 for the first 3 months? It really helps get your feet off the ground. Once you have been playing for a few months you should have enough saved to buy one year of a basic upgrade using game cash (375000 hbs). There is no need to spend RL money after that unless you really want to! The basic upgrade gives you weekly income, allows you to paper your horses and allows you to enter an entire barn into shows at once (which again showing is the money maker here so this is a huge time save!). It also gives you a 60 acre primary pasture. Pastures are the cheapest way to breed and another way I keep my foundation mares in check. If they don't fit on the pasture they get spayed and put in the show barn or sold.
There are TONS of fancy genes that can be bought with game money or don't require a license. I would be happy to sell a few second generation horses with some fancy open genes to help you out. Just shoot me a PM if you're interested!
Like everyone else has said, the most important part is to have fun! This is a truly incredible community, everyone is very willing to help! :)Post edited by LadyhawkeStables at 2021-02-23 13:22:58Thanked by 1doragon
