Breeding Generations
  • Hey folks, just wondering what sort of approach you find to be best when breeding even lines. I've been breeding my foundations every other month and switching to my 2nd gens, but now my foundations are starting to age out and I now have a bunch of 3rd gens.

Do you prefer to keep replenishing your foundations and continue breeding all generations, or is there a point where it's just as good to focus entirely on your higher generation horses, e.g. have only 3rd, 4th and 5th gen horses? The thing I'm mostly worried about is pasture and barn space given that I'm breeding a few different lines at the same time.

  • Honestly, it's however you want to play the game. :) I know of people who never breed past 2nd generation and those whose lines are 7th and beyond.

Higher generation horses means higher PT scores which means they can train longer and do better in shows. So if increasing your average daily payout is a goal, higher generation horses will help you get there.

Now for me personally, I have enough room to keep a few foundations around to replenish my 2nd gen pastures but for the most part I'm starting to switch to focusing on my higher generations. Now if I could only find the time.. :-?

  • I currently keep a small group of each generation running simultaneously, a 30 acre pasture for each generation and a 60 acre for my foundations. I replace mares that are aging out or don’t quite fit my color/type goals every season. Once I get all the mares matching my color goals, I’ll start comparison testing and replacing mares with superior ones. :) that way I never run into the issue of running out of a certain generation. I’m only up to the 4th gen right now, but so far it’s working out okay. I’m pretty strict with my breeding standards, so I’m doing okay with space for breeding stock right now, and luckily you can buy barns for show ponies with horse bucks!

I keep the foundations in my largest pasture because I find second generation horses to be my biggest moneymakers- a lot of them level off in the 7W level, which has excellent point payouts per class. Horses I breed past that gen tend to have slightly higher PTs, so they level off around the 8L or 8R level, which has much poorer payouts. It takes quite a few generations for the PTs to get high enough to reach 8W, so until that point the second gens reign supreme. :))

I mostly play on mobile so I can't usually see signatures!
Breeding Pearl Warmbloods, Little Red Riding Ponies, and... whatever else suits my fancy lol.
  • I have foundations through 7th generation pastures for breeding. I have found that my foundations had become overwhleming in their numbers so I need to reduce their numbers, I'm letting some boys age out. I will continue to still breed them as the 2nd gen show ponies are big money makers for me. They tend to max out at the 7W level.

  • That's good to know that the 2nd Gen horses can be really great showers, I don't usually have the time to manage my show horses with too much detail, I just usually keep most of geldings/spayed mares.

I would like to try to go into the higher generations and chase down some high PT scores, so maybe I'll pick one line to do that with, while keeping the others breeding at 1-2 generations. Thanks everyone!
