Tiny Dots - what causes this

    Fiddlers Starry Nights

this cool stallion has tiny dots. I bred him to an assortment of mares and not ONE baby got tiny dots.
What gene causes those little dots?

    Thank you

  • To be snowflake you need at least het Lp (Lp/-) and hom snow (snow/snow). Of your gene tested foals, most seem only het snow (snow/-), so they won’t have the snowflake pattern

  • You need snow/snow and a Lp for it to show. So the foals need a copy of snow from their mom to show.
  • Also, you should be aware that snowflake is a variation of appaloosa varnishing and causes progressively larger spots as the horses age until they are nearly completely white. Here are some examples at various ages:

  • what's the difference between sn and snow?

  • Where do you see "sn"? I know "sno" is an allele of the cream gene that is often confused with "snow," which is a variation of appy varnish.
  • I was looking at the snowflake upgrade page and it says "sn" and "Sn" but not snow so I was afraid to push the button
