I think I understood that horses with genes that change the appearance progressively (like grays and appys) are automatically set to refresh every month, but I'm not sure if that still only actually happens when their page is opened. Other horses aren't put in the refresh queue automatically (except when they first age up from yearlings) and only refresh when it's done manually.
