What PT numbers make the best show ponies?
-
This is a question primarily for experienced players. In your experience, what PT numbers usually make the best show horses?
My current strategy is to keep every foal with a PT over 10.40(because anything below that can be created on the create-a-horse page) until they have leveled off, then evaluate them and auction off the ones that aren't showing well. Any foals with a lower PT go straight into the auction. So far, my oldest home-bred lined horses are 10 years old and not quite leveled off yet, but seem to be showing pretty well. However, as I keep running out of barn space, I'm wondering if there's a good way to refine my strategy.
Any suggestions from players who have seen a lot on this game?
As an example, this is my oldest personally bred lined horse. He's not a great show horse, but he's got some (I think)pretty respectable points and hasn't leveled off just yet. His PT is 10.20.
Sweet Chill
This one is doing much better, with a PT of 10.50:
Dusty Bronze Morning
My only 10 y/o with PT over 11 is Inconsistent and thus not a fair comparison(and definitely not doing as well as the two above).

I have been tracking gelded colts and some mares and I have found that while the lower PT horses might level off sooner, some of them seem to be doing REALLY well and raking in the points. I am also tracking a bunch of bootstrap colts, and the highest PT colts are not always the ones getting the best points.
I compare them to other horses the same age and toss the ones that don't do as well. I'm not tossing the lower PT ones. Maybe as i get further into the game, but right now, it seems that most horses have a PT between 9 and 12. A good show horse keeps showing and earning up to their last month of existence.

Right, I know all of that, but thank you for expressing it. I guess I need to clarify what I'm looking for.
I know lower PT scores can be really good show horses(usually in the 9.5-9.9 PT range, from what I've seen) and it all depends on where they level off. My foals with lower PT scores are usually in the 9.8-10.4 range. My question is more along the lines of this: are there any PT score ranges that anyone has found to be pretty consistently not great show horses when they level off? Like, for example, in the lower PT ranges, I've seen that most horses with a score below 7 don't tend to level off in a good spot, whereas 9.8 or 9.9 PT tends to level off in a pretty good spot. Is there a range in the higher PT scores that doesn't usually level off in a good point-earning place?Post edited by MackZ at 2022-10-31 22:12:39 -
You have to remember that every time you show a horse, it will be up against a range of different horses every time. A horse that has levelled off in a good place may end up 5th in it's class one show and 1st at the next show. If you have lots of good show horses but are running out of space, then the only answer is more barns! I've sent you some hbs to put towards some more stalls. :)Thanked by 1MackZ

Thank you! I certainly wasn't expecting or looking for that!
I've started looking through the show records of my leveled-off 10+ year-olds and putting the ones with a long record of being at the bottom into the auction. Like this horse, for example:
Ghost Faced
As well as the ones that have leveled off in a low class, like this one:
Edwina
I figure, if they're no longer improving through training and are consistently losing, or they've stopped at a low grade, their stall might be better occupied by a horse with more potential. I'll see how that works out. Thank you for your advice! -
Happy to help. :)
I usually go through my 10 yrs+ show horses about half way through the month and auction off any that consistently finish in the bottom few places.Thanked by 1MackZ -
I feel like the pt is a hard one. I think it all depends on where the horse levels off. Level 7 seems to be the sweet spot that pays well. Most 2nd gens end up in this area. I try to keep a mix of horses with different pt scores like what white valley and fiddler said , your lower pt horses will level off quicker but will rack in more points at an early stage. Your higher pt horses wont start really adding the points on till they are much older and closer to leveling off. I ushually go by the horses age and there life time payout. I will ushually sell off a show horse if per say theyre 5years old and only have 2,000hbs pay out. I go by there age by how much there payout should be. So a good shower in my books would be that 5 year old that has a 5k or more payout. Once they hit 10 thats when it starts to decrease but i keep them because thats when there daily pay becomes much bigger! So i hold on to them till they end up archeived in rollover .
