This is my first year doing the gift exchange and wasnt sure how some things worked. If i send some things to my giftee should i send a messege letting them know i sent things or do they get a notification when things are sent to them? I just want to make sure they are aware they are receiving items.

They receive a notification. If the gift sent is a horse, its name will be labeled with "Gift" when it appears in their barn.

they have a special tag on them ; you are supposed to stay Anonomous until later in the GE :) Not to mention as today is the first day of gifting everyone is looking for those special tagged horses lol !
they will show up in the Primary barn looking like this for a name :

Ok thank you . I wasnt sure how it all worked but my giftee sent me some gifts and now i see how a present box appears on the top screen. So this answeres my question .

You can send them an anonymous message via the gift exchange page. I do that sometimes for little messages to go along with gifts.
