How to use surrogate mares?
  • Hey! I searched the forum and couldn't find anything related...

I'd like to start using surrogate mares as part of my breeding program, but have no clue as to the best way to go about this.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  • Under Advanced Facilities you will find the Advanced breeding lab, once there you will be able to create an embryo with a studs straw and mare of choice.
Once you make the embryo you can use that on a 'surrogate' mare by going to the implant embryo page and choosing from the options there.
Hope this makes sense and helps!

  • Great! Thanks. :) I guess I should have clarified...what's the best way to go about utilizing said advanced breeding facilities and the surrogate mares? Can you give me your best spiel on why surrogate mares are better (if they are indeed better)?
  • If you buy embryos, you need a surrogate to turn that into a foal. And if you have a premium upgrade and can flush eggs and create your own embryos, then you can use surrogate mares to create several foals from the same dam in a single season. Otherwise there's no real reason to use surrogates. They don't allow you to produce better foals than you could by implanting a straw in a mare directly and having her have her own foal. Using the straw to create an embryo from the mare and then implanting that in a surrogate allows you to breed the same mare more than once without using eggs, but I'm not sure how many times. And it costs more than creating an embryo with an egg and a lot more than just using a straw directly.

  • It's also useful if you have a mare that you really like but is about to turn 20 and will no longer be breedable. If you flush eggs in time, you will be able to get offspring from her even after she's aged out.

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure.
