Why would a "Best of bunch" foal get neutered?... Closed
  • This boy was the best of the bunch from 100 mares, yet got gelded. Why? I don't understand the way this works. Wouldn't the whole 100 foals get neutered then if the best got neutered?

  • Just because he has the highest ability of the bunch doesn't mean he's better than average for that cross. The other foals could be worse than him, but good foals for what their parents can throw. Breeding advice compares to the parents and best of the bunch compares to the pasture mates. They are different measures.

  • Breeding advice does not compare a horse to the rest of the horses in the pasture. Only to its parents.

  • If I'm understanding Cavalynn right, wouldn't the other horses fail SBA too? If they're worse than him? I Understand what you say, Ammit, and I understand that bob only compares to the other foals. Bit if he's bad, shouldn't the others all be worse?
  • SBA doesn't mean the foal is bad, just that they don't compare favorably to one or both of their parents. But if that foal's parent(s) have higher breeding ability than the parents of the other foals, that foal can have higher breeding ability than the other foals, yet not compare favorably to its parent(s) while some of the other foals do compare favorably to their parents.

  • When you say "favorably" don't you mean breeding ability-wise? This is where I am getting confused.

I looked at the logs. Looks like you did the same thing to multiple pastures in September.

  • Yes, I mean breeding ability. PT score has absolutely nothing to with any of the testing except for performance testing. The only part of PT that can cause a horse to be spelded is really bad inconsistency. But if that happens, the test will now give that reason when you run it.

  • I don't know why your stallion got gelded, I mean he is Star papered, and his parents are A and Blue papered?

  • Because she gelded him herself.

  • @Kintara I would assume since both parents are A/B coming from Star** studs on both sides, they have not been run through BA/SBA. Hence why this one didn't make it.

  • No, it's because she altered it herself. Nothing to do with SBA. Breeding advice does not care about grandparents.
