Question about breeding inconsistency
-
Hey everybody,
Wondering if I could get some more insight on consistency. I did go to the very helpful wiki but wanted to clarify what I understood from it.
It seems I have been getting a lot of inconsistent foals lately. Their dams and sires however are not inconsistent. I try not to breed inconsistency as the wiki said two inconsistent will give you a higher chance of inconsistency.
The question, for the crosses in which the parents are both consistent and the foal is inconsistent, is that out of random or is this a genetic thing? In which one of those parents is passing inconsistency on?
Thanks for any help to this question. I would like to get the inconsistency out of my herd but I didn’t want to start culling if it is at random sometimes.

My understanding is that there are levels within the "consistent" score, since some consistent horses can be made perfectly consistent in the gene mod lab and get a small bump in PT.
As far as breeding is concerned, it does seem to be at least somewhat random, but consistent horses appear to throw a higher percentage of consistent foals, while inconsistent horses often throw a higher percentage of inconsistent foals.
Whatever the case, there certainly seems to be a lot of hidden numbers at work to determine the breeding results.Post edited by MackZ at 2024-11-06 22:08:04 -
MackZ summed it up well. It is a bit random.
I only want consistent horses so I geld/spay all inconsistent and throw them in the show barn. I've had a couple "very inconsistent" foals bred from inconsistent horses and I try to prevent that.

With breeding stock , I dont pay much attention to it on the mares, since they really dont show after they go in the pasture ( usually around 4 yo ) and stay there until they age out. Stallions i try to "fix" to be consistent to help mitigate the wierd ups and downs in the show ring, as they do tend to stay longer in the barn and are obligate show horses :)

Thank you all for the input. Everyone contributed good insight.
