Era merging convo round 2 -Feedback wanted

It has been about 5 days now and convo has died down on all three servers so lets recap where we are at and then look at some new things to ponder.
I asked: How many clubs should stay distinct?
The solution that seems to make the most sense is to have a combo system. We have a hard limit of 15 era clubs, but any server might have less than 15 clubs depending on the activity level.
The system would work like this:
If a server already has 15 active clubs at the start of a new era there WILL be a merge of an older era to keep the total number of clubs to 15. The least active era will be merged to make room for the new era.
However; even if a server has less than 15 era clubs there might be merging. Any club with less than 20k is at risk for merging in the future. Any club with less than 10k horses WILL be merged.

When looking at the futurities however I found that the activity level of a club does not correlate to the activity level of that futurity era. I really think we will need to handle era clubs and futurity merging separately.
For era clubs we can classify them like this
Very healthy: over 20K registered
At risk: sub 15k registered
In danger: sub 10k registered
For futurity eras we can classify them as:
Very health: triple digit points to 25th place.
At risk: Triple digits past 20th but not to 25th place.
In danger: Double digits at 20th place or single digit points at all.
On Bluegrass there are 3 in danger era clubs, 2 at risk clubs and 14 healthy era clubs. There are 2 in danger futurity eras, 8 at risk futurity eras and, 9 healthy eras. The two in danger futurity eras are HEALTHY clubs with over 20k registered horses. Some of the most at risk clubs have healthy futurities and vice versa.
Another example mesa does not have a single in danger era club, but 7 of it's 9 futurity are at risk or in critical danger.
To put it short they need to be handled separately.

The initial form of this idea was to have a single club that eras merged into, but with more thought and feedback it seems to make the most sense to have a number of clustered clubs. Our era board might look like [0, 1/2/3, 4, 5/6, 7/8, 10, 11] as the possible era clubs. These groups would be flexible and might change every six month. There would be no need to change registration on your clubs or your programs. They would still act like independent clubs as far as registration and breeding goes but would simple share a common prize pool.
This is the same as real life horse shows that might combine the maiden and amateur classes if there is not enough entries. If at the next show there is enough entries they would be separate again.
The bonus of the clumped era system is instead of a single combined "retired era club" that could become rather large I can balance the older eras to keep competition more evening spread out. That would have the most minimal impact on anyone's programs.
Remember as I said in my first post, this is only about older eras, not limited or primary eras.
I asked: How fast should the merging happen?
I would have needed to see an extremely compelling reason presented as to why we should rush merging. Not only did I not see any (as expected) there was a lot of reason given for a slow roll out. So we will be going the slow wind down of total number of active eras and futurities for sure.
Re bluegrass: I let bluegrass discuss if they needed some support with futurity era numbers in June but I really did not see enough support or clear consensus on that to justify doing anything in June. Still open to feedback on that but it can't just be the same players commenting. If you have feedback on this please speak up.
I asked: What do we call the new combined/retired eras?
This was asked with the original assumption that we would have a single merged down to era but I think that probably will not be the case now. That means we won't have a specific name for the merged eras. They will just be "Era 1/2/3" for example and be listed in the older eras.

I really like this solution, as we still have our eras, just that those with low numbers will combine for awards, I didn't realise you could do it like that. Especially with the Eras and Futurities being able to combine separately. I think Bluegrass will manage the futurities until you combine them, realistically it's not that hard to fill futurities once we put our mind to it.

I love the idea that merging isn't necessarily permanent and when there is enough activity in the era again it could again stand alone and run separately.

OK , I like this idea but I have a question ; in the Era clubs you discussed merging foundations gen2 and 3 .. and then multiple others into "Silver" "Gold" and "Platinum" will that also happen? Or will combining the Eras prevent that? IMO there will be Alot of Era Breeders shut out becuase of the increased Compitition in combining everything.

I am not sure who you think is shut out of what and why? Maybe there is a misunderstanding about what is happening. We are not combining everything. Can you explain what you think is happening? That might help me figure out where the misunderstanding is.

I do not have a Forest Account.. my question is if both the generations and the Eras are combined Alot of players will be competing for many fewer GMT's and awards.

Over the past year or so, I've transitioned to breeding for Eras, and have really enjoyed it. I'm down with all of the changes mentioned, for the health of the game and the players. I don't think I have a personal stake in any of the potential era merges, as I play mostly in the newer ones.
Thanks for being a real human game dev, who consults their real human players. That's such an absurd concept coming from being a console gamer. -
I don’t have much to add re: era merging since I’m not terribly competitive or active on the era LBs. I do worry about this servers capacity to handle another era in June, at least when it comes to futurity. I know I get incredibly overwhelmed each breeding season trying to balance futurity needs with breeding goals for my own lines.

lecobb8 - I really appreciate you saying that. I have been having so many issues with member behavior/toxic entitlement over the last 2 years or so that I have been seriously considering shutting off that contact and not allowing member feedback at all. It gets to a point where the foot stamping and ultimatums and drama are just utterly soul draining to deal with.
It really feels like some people have gotten very used to being able to openly tell me what they think (not remembering or knowing that is a huge rarity in gaming) and have taken that to abusive places. I often feel like a drive through worker being screamed at by irate customers because we decided to no longer offer some menu item.
I had to put that notice in the original post just to remind people to be kind, which is a sad state to be in. Having someone speak up and recognize that I don't have to be available like this and that they appreciate it is very meaningful.

That entitlement is what ruined a certain other horse game that I started with. Money spending players and their demands and complaints and the game owner’s desire to appeal to those players lead to the game owner’s continually, over time, making changes that made it harder and harder for non-spending players to succeed.
I started playing that game as a minor who was not allowed to spend money on games. By adulthood, I was working to support a real horse and could not spend money on games. In the beginning, it was easy for me to succeed and earn the things I needed to be profitable, even if not truly competitive. When the spending players realized that was possible, they ended that. Making sure they were the only ones to profit. While complaining to the game owners who altered the game to make it harder as well.
Still, I found other ways to succeed and even to get horses on the leader boards. The spending players eventually squashed that, too, using their culture and clique with each other. Even as the game owners continued to make changes to further handicap non spending players.
Eventually I quit. And years later, I came here. I had been one of the original players of that game, but I got (essentially) run off.
So, I appreciate that you make sure those same issues don’t kill this game. You continue to make changes so this game doesn’t *have* to be pay to play. And I appreciate that, as I try to buy a house in this economy and may loose the ability to spend more than my premium membership.
And I also try to maintain a good attitude towards these changes, because I remember what it was like to shut out of a game I enjoyed because of player demands.
Not going to call myself perfect, but I do appreciate what you do.
I think it only makes sense that eras fade over time and some solution would have to be found.
Perhaps, if I had shared my 7 line more, 7 would not be in danger of merging. But that’s on me for keeping memories of being stingy with my horses on the other game (a strategy necessary to succeed over there) I’m trying to unlearn it, but I’m so busy I’ve kind of lost touch of community over here.
As it is, I see the merging as a good excuse to let go of the old as I chase the new. Because my account is kind of too big to manage and I should get it better under control. :)

I also appreciate the fact you don't have to "pay to win", I was part of a MMORG that we started in the Beta.. one of the OG Players.. eventually between hackers and the fact to improve you HAD to pay cash for things I got shut out. I truly am Thankful to you Ammit, that you try to prevent that here.. I know I can be a PITA, lol, and sometimes "push back", but the fact that we Can "push back" is one of the things that makes this game so great. Please dont give up on us old codgers as we try to navigate this new and ever changing Internet world.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. There has been no additional suggestions on any server so I think we good to go here. We will start rolling out these changes in December.
Before that happens and after the Summer Celebration events I will audit each server and start making a plan for what needs done with each one. That will get posted so it won't be a surprise which eras are impacted.Need to contact me? Read this first.

I appreciate all you do for your game and the community Ammit, I am sorry that some folks get uppity :/ but thank you for your patience with folks and thank you for your awesome game. Try not to let some folks get you down for there are more of us who truly appreciate you and your teams efforts to keep this game interesting and fun.
