New here wanting to try and breed for grey (white) and black herd like the Percheron breed
-
New her so any help would be great... what should i be looking for in horse to buy? TO get black and "grey" genes like the Percheron breed?Post edited by FLS Equine Cente at 2015-08-22 18:52:04

I'd say go for Warmblood size, anything with E_ aa would be a great place to start. EE or Ee means the horse will not be chestnut based. In combination with that, aa means the horse will be black and not bay. Like this mare - http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=3472863
You can keep an eye out for the Herd Helpers like Black Based Gray, or browse these horses for sale. They're being sold by the Foundation Rescue account so they are all Perfect Foundations, just without the tattoo. You'll have to do some browsing to see if you can find any black ones, but you can find them sometimes.

Welcome to Hunt and Jump. You can keep an eye out here on the forum for Herd Helpers that are either gray or black, or check out the Foundation Rescue by searching owner 13. All horses in that rescue are perfect foundations, which means that they are the best at both breeding and showing that regular create horses can be and that they will add 3 points to their show scores with every training and have the same score each time they show in a week. Not all the horses will be the colors you are looking for, but some might be.
Here are some pictures of gray horses at various ages. Each horse grays out differently, and it can be hard to see on some colors. Genetically, if the horse has been color tested, look for Gg in the gene test results for heterozygous gray and GG for homozygous gray horses. Gray is a complete dominant, which means that any horse with even one G allele will gray out.
Here is a gray foal.

Notice the grayish patches on her withers and croup.
This foal shows similar grayish patches and a light "goggle" at the eye as well.

Here is a 2 year old that shows more gray patches than the two foals.

This is what gray looks like on a homozygous cream horse at 2.

Here is a homozygous gray 4 year old.

Here is a heterozygous gray 8 year old.

Black horses will appear black.
Horses that are black are either Ee aa or EE aa in their gene test results. This means that they are at least heterozygous for black pigment (Ee). EE is homozygous black. The horse must also be homozygous for recessive agouti (aa). The dominant A creates bay horses even when heterozygous.
You will want to avoid any of the dilution genes--cream, dun, silver, champagne. (Ccr, D. Z, and Ch).
To make sure of producing percheron-like black or gray offspring, start with horses that are EE aa G?. This will prevent you from the chance of producing chestnuts. You will also want to avoid any patterns except roan (though even this is not always approved). That would include the dominant whites (KitW, Kit W2, KitW3, KitW4), sabino (KitSb[1, 2, 3), tobiano (KitTo), splash (Sps, Sps3, and Pax3C70Y), Frame (Olw), and appaloosa (Llp). You will want to find horses with a White Factor of None, Minimal or Light, since less white is considered more desirable than large white stockings and facial markings. (All of this information is from a breed description.)
I hope this is helpful. Don't hesitate to ask if anything isn't clear or if you have other questions. We are a friendly community and like giving new players a helping hand.Post edited by SandyCreekAcres at 2015-08-22 20:44:32Thanked by 1Johara -

You are going to want plain black foundations and blacks with gray to mimic the breed. There are so many of these in the auction and for sale on a regular basis you are not going to have to settle for anything else. I would not over complicate things worrying to much genetics and pattern stuff.
Here is a black based gray herd helper to get you started. The link expires in 24 hours :)

I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

I usually breed for ponies, so don't have a ton of intact horses over 14.2, but, I do have this 16.0 black Perfect Foundation mare you can have to help build your foundation herd. She's a bit older, but, would help you starting out. I'd just need your Player ID # so you will be able to get her.

Thanks Covus He is cute:) But looking for solid black with gray gene to breed up to start level though. EE aa GG or Gg with as little white or pattern as possible :)

I have this 2nd generation stallion that I bred last season. He looks like he may be a better fit for your breeding goals than mine as I breed champagne.
I haven't papered him but he's passed all other tests and I would think he will be a B paper as he didn't get snipped and his sire is an exceptional producer.

Let me know if you would like him -
I would how much?
