Heritability of height
-
Does anyone have any experience with the heritability of height in game? I plan on experimenting a little and wondered if anybody had given it a go before?
Thank you!Quoink Stud, Breeder of Wyke Warmbloods and Sport Ponies: H&J ID#218412 -
Well, I mostly create and breed warmbloods, but a few ponies have crept in from outside stock, so I have some relevant data. I think there may be some errors, but it's time to get supper started, so I'll have to pass on the results of an examination of the first 50 foals for this year. It works out to this: (first figure is sire's height, second is dam's height, third is foal's height, fourth is number of foals at that height)
14.0 x 14.0 = 14.0 1
14.0 x 14.0 = 14.2 1
14.0 x 16.0 = 14.2 3
14.0 x 16.0 = 15.0 1
14.0 x 16.0 = 15.1 2
14.0 x 16.0 = 15.3 4
14.0 x 16.0 = 16.0 1
16.0 x 14.0 = 14.0 1
16.0 x 14.0 = 14.1 3
16.0 x 14.0 = 14.2 1
16.0 x 14.0 = 14.3 1
16.0 x 14.0 = 15.3 3
16.0 x 16.0 = 15.1 1
16.0 x 16.0 = 15.2 3
16.0 x 16.0 = 15.3 3
16.0 x 16.0 = 16.0 10
16.0 x 16.0 = 16.1 1
16.0 x 16.0 = 16.2 5
16.0 x 16.0 = 16.3 2
It looks like there's considerable variability, but warmblood crosses tend to be taller than warmblood-pony crosses, generally speaking. And pony to pony crosses tend to be shorter. Remember, though, that this year (and probably next as well) most warmblood parents are 16.0 and most pony parents are 14.0. Going forward, this will not be the case, and the results will become more mixed.

I've had a couple of 16.3hh and 17hh foals born and was considering starting a "tall" line of horses. Thanks again for all the info ( you're brilliant!)- I'm not really sure how to pursue the idea now, seeing how variable the results are. Maybe I'll just do it with a few horses and see what I get.Quoink Stud, Breeder of Wyke Warmbloods and Sport Ponies: H&J ID#218412
