Questions for newbie
  • Hello! I am new here and I have two main questions...
    how do foals get points?
and If I change my stallion in the pasture do they loose the mares the bonus they receive from sitting in there so many days?
  • Up until you hold 20k points every horse you create will have points. After that they’re earned through showing. Your Mares are the only ones who accrue a breeding bonus in the pasture :) so feel free to move the studs around as you please. I show all of my studs so they earn more points.
  • But the foals are born with no points?
  • Yep! All foals are born without points. Also mares who are taken out (even if immediately put back in) lose ALL their bonus, so double check that your sure if you want to move a mare out. 30+ days in the pasture add a significant bonus to their foals, thus, increasing the intact rate. But be mindful to not neglect your show herd, as it's the backbone of everything. Ideally you want 3 show horses to every intact horse. It'll take a while for those who just started out but it's very important otherwise you will dig yourself into a hole that you cannot get out. (Like I did, don't make the same mistake.)

All this comes to my next point, pointed yearlings. Why yearling pointed creates are so valuable is they have points that equal as much as a 7 to 8 year old regular create most of the times. Foals with 400+ points especially 700+, you can really get a pretty penny from.

(Little side note of how I'm starting my other account.)
I found on my other account (Wolvevensleet) that selling every pointed create I make has me getting some hbs coming in. But be mindful there's not much to do and it's somewhat of a slow process. It's just ideal for me because I have this account that has 1k plus horses, so I'm occupied here. The other is just to create nice cheap pointed foals and breed the best of the best in horses with Nd1. Also RS horses, if you get one, sell it. Usually 15k for an RS is the normal, below that your usually getting a good deal but some are more poorly sought after than others. This should let you know if you'd like to take this route or not, your decision!

Also if you plan on selling your foals and for a price, make sure to breed evenly a get some color into the herd! If you have any more (not that I didn't add a lot of things you didn't ask haha!) questions, don't be afraid to ask!
  • So what should I be looking for in show horses? I have mostly been playing around with color and I just got a pretty buckskin appaloosa filly.

This thread by ConfluenceStables should help!

As for evaluating show horses that you created: higher PT means a horse will train longer and level off in a higher class, and higher levels give more points. So those horses will eventually earn you more than their lower PT counterparts. But they take some time to get there, and they tend to hop up the levels so quickly they won't earn many points on the way, so in the short term, low PT horses will make you fast points.

But for pointed creates, I recommend just looking at the points they were created with. On my younger accounts I auction off the ones with <200 while I build up a herd. Then once I'm getting close to 20000 points, I start to sell off the low 200's, then the 250s, until I get to only horses with 300+ points.<br />
Of course two 150 point horses make you the same amount of hbs as one 300 point horse, but barn space fills up quickly, so you have to make sure the horses you keep are earning their spot.

For example, my oldest free account is MoonGuardian17, which is about to reach 20000 points with only about 45 horses. That's an extreme example (with a lot of really lucky creates), but you get the idea!
  • ... and I was still signed in to the forum on that account when I posted this. It's SherwoodStables, btw.
