Update on the downtime this week.
  • Thank you all so much for your patience during the downtime over the past two days. The issue we encountered is that there are simply too many horses in the game. Traditional databases are only physically capable of handling so many line items at a time and HAJ has simply overtaxed its resources. This is not an issue caused by the number of players in the game, the problem stems from the number of supermax sized barns that are simply adding as many horses as possible using automation. Many of these horses are never even viewed by human eyes. The churn of creating as many IV purchased show barns beyond any ability to appreciate the horses in them is the problem we need to address.

The two ways we can go about addressing the issue are to embrace the growth and completely recode the game or make changes to address the exponential growth caused by automation.

To prevent this issue from occurring again we will be making several changes.
[]The first will be aggressively locking down the server during the seasonal rollover to free up server resources.
[]The second will be reprogramming parts of how rollover works to add additional protections.
[]Third, we are implementing a hard cap on IV purchased barns. Accounts with 20k stalls or more will no longer be able to purchase barns with IVs at all.
[]Finally, we will be doing some aggressive culling measures to reduce the number of horses on the server. I am unsure what those will look like at this time but will mostly involve just cleaning up abandoned accounts.

Again I really appreciate how understanding and supportive everyone has been. This was Haystack's first major server issue while I was unavailable and it was pretty stressful on him. Thankfully you guys are awesome and didn't give him any grief during the process. :)>-

As far as we are aware there are no current issues but if you suspect one with your account please drop me a line and I will look into it.

  • Thanks so much for all you guys do hope yall can figure everything out as smoothly as possible :x
  • I'm still stuck on '20k stalls' :)) I thought I was doing good with my 1000 stall show barn =)) Thank you so much for everything you guys do with this game. The system and the community you guys have put together here are the best!

  • I'm cool with whatever it takes to keep the game running smoothly.
  • The game has grown exponentially over the years. It's amazing.

  • It would be fun to know how many barns that are bigger than 20k. I am, but is of course rady to do changes to help saving the game that I love so much <3
  • We'll do whatever it takes to keep the game running. Thank you for all you do to feed our addiction! :)

  • This will be a hard decision! Thanks for the work you've done in the meantime!

I'd really appreciate a new tool to really weed out breeding stock, like a ranking system within the barn to see what are the bottom producers of a generation. I recently went through all of my breeding stock and culled a lot, but I still find myself overwhelmed at breeding season with the amount of breeding stock I create, especially mares. Now that I have better stock I'm making more and more that pass all the tests!
  • Maybe one for the show ponies too? As far as who has more wins.
  • You don't need a ranking system for show horses. Just search your barn filtered by age and ordered by points to show your top performers by age.

It's not possible to rank by generation because it's not possible to group by generation.

  • Ah, thank you! That'll help me narrow down my show ponies!
  • Thank you for all the hard work for fixing it, I'm so happy the game is back again!
And I really hope that the game can keep running smoothly so we can all still enjoy playing it.

However, over the past few days I have been thinking/reflecting about my own playing of the game, how I'm handling the game mechanics and the game mechanics in general, as well as thinking about and what is the cause of these many horses, the automation of horses and possible solutions to this.

So the following is not any critcism or something, just me reflecting and thinknig out loud. For starters, I think this automation of horses that is going on has to do a lot with the showing system. With the old system you could have a few big earning horses and some lesser ones. Back then the credo already was: 'you need more horses', as 2 horses earning you 100 a week is more than 1 earning you 150. But I feel that the current showing/ point-based system really intesified that credo: every horse that has even a few points is valuable, and by just showing it gets points automatically, whilst in the old system you had to pay more attention to your horse [except if you were really big, than you could lose a few bucks by showing some 'wrongly' placed horses], as only the top half earned HBs for you.
However, I also understand that the old system was too complex to grasp, so this is a better and easier system overall. So I do like the current system, but I also notice that I tend to keep more horses and sell less because they all earn points easily and thus are all keepers.

The other thing I personally encounter as well is not having time to go through all my horses. With the older 'longer' season, you had time to sort out everything and prep for the new season. Nowadays I only see most of my own bred horses as foals, as the mares are being pasture bred or are just 'names' being selected in a drop down list. I do not have time to look at how they produce, at their exact genetics and thus finding the perfect match for them or notice that they are bad producers and should be culled. But still, this is mostly my own fault for having so much horses ofcourse, I could always get rid of them and have a managable/better sortable number, but it 'pays off' to have a lot of horses as they all rack in points each week (and sorting/culling them takes so much time, which I'd rather spend on breeding, thus resulting in more horses...:'))

So I've been thinking about possible solutions. Changing the showing system back to the old would scare off new players and that is not desirable, even though it will lessen the need for more horses. Changing/prolonging the (breeding) season, and thus giving more time to sort out and/or cull, is also not benificial to the game overall as it has shown a drop in activity and losing members over time, which would result in a shutdown of the entire game.

So I was just thinking, maybe an increased pay for yumming horses would result in more people yumming and thus giving more space / less horses for the server? Not thinking about doubling it but just a tad more, say 2700? That way yumming directly pays more than keeping them in your barns and waiting for auctions to run or keeping them around because they will earn points and earn you more over time as you keep them. Maybe this also could be a temporary measure / special period in the year (sort of like spring cleaning your house but than cleaning your stables) to bring down the numbers?

Or, even better: a special 'donate this horse' button, making players donate their pointed show horses (how high or low points wouldn't matter) instead of culling them, where new players can pick a few of them up to help them start up (the 'adopt a horse project' that is already going on but made easier/more direct). At least for me personally I'd feel better and be more inclined to getting rid of some of my pointed horses knowing I'd help new players, whilst now I mostly keep them just because they have a nice amount of points.

Another solution could be to limit the amount of horses you can breed and/or create each year. Not a fun measure, not sure how that would be implemented in a fair way, but that might be necessary and might result in more appreciating the horses you have and/or picking out the best of the best to breed and reproduce. However, implementing the stall cap on big barns would have a similar effect so that might be enough to start with.

I also would love some system to make culling horses more easier, as was mentioned by Ichigo, but I have no clue how such a system could/should look like.

So, might be a long post, might not be something useful, but I just wanted to share my thoughts. Again, not meant as criticism on anything, just some observations I made on my own playing and some solutions I could think of.

Overall, I'm just glad you all worked so hard to make this game, to keep it running through all times, even with massive downtimes/errors like the last one. Thanks to you this game grew ever better and I'm absolutely sure you'll do everything in your power to keep it running, keep it improving and keep us enjoying it like we do the best you guys can, and I am really grateful for that. You're all a wonderful team of people, making sure we can feel wonderful too and forget our issues/problems/whatever is going on and feel wonderful and happy in the Hajinc world, with our gorgeous horses and the wonderful community that is also such a big part of this game. So again, a big big thank you for all your hard work, from the start, in the past, the present and the future!

  • Was the price to purchase barns wkth IVs raised? I didn't see that mentioned anywhere, but I've been saving for a new barn and now the price is almost double what it was the other day when I last checked?
  • The prices haven't changed, but it is still based on the number of stalls you have on that account.

  • Ok... it was supposed to be less than 800 ivs (I want to say 770ish) the other day for me to purchase a mondo barn and now it's 1245ivs. I have NOT purchased any barns in between because I was saving up for a mondo barn

  • This definitely made me go check the number of horses I have, and I'm really surprised to find it's over 11k. Guess I never really think about it. I know a bunch of them are from a couple of months ago that I just haven't had time to go through, but I'll definitely try to use my day off work this week to weed them out. Have to get over my laziness and enter a few hundred horses into the auctions manually! :-S

Thank you guys for being awesome and keeping the game going! I may not play as much as I used to, but it is still great to be able to come back and play when I can.
