Genetics vs PT
  • On foals you've bred.... are you more willing to go for PT score or genetics. For example Foal 1 has all the genetics you want but only a 10 consistent PT. But Foal 2 is missing 1 gene (lets say silver,) but has 11.2 consistent PT. Let's assume they've both passes testing and are intact, does gender effect your decision to keep, sell, or snip?

  • I tend to keep everything, because every horse will give me money when I show them.

If I can only choose 1 to breed, then I would breed the one who gets me most exited and curious. If you are thrilled by the thought of getting the highest PT score possible, then keep the one who paper highest, or passes BA with the best parents.
If color is what makes the game fun for you, then breed the one with the best genetics.

The same goes off course for which ones to keep.
If you want a sustainable barn, keep all the horses you breed, and make sure that most of them are show horses. They are the ones who pays for all the fun :)

The only horses I sell, are foundation Rank Specials that does not fit my program. Due to the new auction/barn buying system, that prevents super big barns like me, to buy new barns, I must auction show horses, and I am still working out the criterias for which ones to sell.
  • I'm breeding for color, but I have PT/Paper requirements too, by generation. If a foal has all the genes I need but doesn't meet the PT I want, it gets snipped, and I make a sad face.

My bootstrap lines are purely PT, though, with no concern for color (other than watercolor is nice when I can get it).

  • Thanks Herzeloyde. I'm a sucker for genetics but the thrill of trying to reach the upper PT score has its hold on me too, lol. I think I'm gonna take your words of wisdom and just keep them. Then I have my pretty ponies and maybe a back up breeder if I need.
That must an undertaking in itself, and you have some beautiful horses (my goal some day, to create some of the beauties you have) ..... but it will raise the bar for all of us and the game.
  • I snip anything that doesn't meet standard for my breeding program when genetics come into play (I breed mostly KP and my foals NEED to have 2 kit genes to stay intact) my red foundation offspring need to test superior if they test the same paper level as their parents... My yellow foundation offspring NEED to paper higher than parents... Very rarely do I take PT into consideration
  • Persian ive been making the sad face quite a bit lately. Since I haven't been on here more than 6mos, I figured it was time to ask more questions of experienced persons. I do like your method. Lucky for me I gave myself a little wiggle room on PT and missing 1 gene so I can improve my ponies. I'll tighten up with time. Over-achiever me always does, lol.
  • Bambi I totally get that. I'm guessing KP is like DP in a sense? I don't know a whole lot about it, but I can understand the strickness needed for a program like that. Some day I'll work up to that level of all of not. I'm giving myself a little wiggle room to be able to improve for now.
  • It's kind of like DP in the sense it needs multiple genes to truly show.. KP need 2 kit genes (W20, Roan, Sabino, Tobiano, etc) plus 2 KP genes to show, whereas DP needs at minimum 3 darkening genes (2 sooty + 1 DP, 2 DP + 1 sooty) to darken the coat past a normal Homozygous sooty horse

  • SheWolf yeah, for a long while I was just amassing as many foundation mares as I could get that *could* work with my goals, and then GMTing up a couple studs to be what I actually wanted. I only started last October, and I did a total barn clearout and restart ... December? January? so I'm only going to start being able to breed my second-gen foals next month.

  • I personally don't take much notice of PT, if it's a colt I need them to be superior to sire, or meet my expectations for that generation, and have most of the colours I want LOL. You can't for sure say that the 11.2PT foal will be a better breeder than the 10PT foal. If both were fillies and both passed SBA and papered where I needed them to, then I'd just keep both and see how they bred!

  • Bambi ok, that makes more sense. Definitely as far as a breeding program I would do the same thing since it seems to be more demanding genetics.

Persian ive honestly considered doing that too already but some how the pixel pony gods have let me pull out a couple general creates that have been what my goal (minus the 12+ pt score, lol) is and I've managed to buy a couple good colts with 11+ PT. I've been selling off everything else that does fit unless it's a good show horse.
  • I've always said 'Why not both?', so that's what I've been breeding for!
