Just shade variation?
-
I have two brown duns, posted below. I LOVE the shade of the first one, and am just wondering if there’s anything I can breed for to get that shade? Both of these horses have one sooty allele, so I’m not sure what’s causing the difference. Is it just random shade variation?

The first horse did get a copy of DP from his paternal grandsire.
You can also try for brown duns who are StySty instead of StyS. -
@Visions :o that’s exciting! I didn’t want to guess whether he had DP because I’m so bad at detecting it :-)) I wonder how Roamin Wild would look with another sooty?Player ID #250257, She/Her

There is also a LOT of variation among dun horses even with DP. For example I have this definitely het DP Buckskin dun foal (sire was hom) who is several shades lighter than his dam (also buckskin dun):

His mother:
Hikaru Genji
Here's my only brown dun (Hom At) for an extra example:

You can probably get lots of different shade variations just by rerolling the second mare's portrait too, I've tried it with a few of my duns before!ID: 247225

Yeah, it's very noticeable if you create dark red dun horses. All are hom sooty, but some look almost like hom sooty chestnuts, and some are really pale tan. Dun seems to just throw things off. At least with red duns you can judge by their legs.
