Slow day...
-
Since it seems to be a slow day on the forums, let's talk about our childhoods :D
What did you want to be when you grew up and why?
I wanted to be a Marine Biologist because I absolutely loved Orcas! After learning about Keiko (Free Willy) and learning about the life he lived, I wanted to make a difference... Maybe one day when my children are grown, I will be able to accomplish my childhood dream :) -
A vet!.....I work retail. (:|
-
I wanted to be a train driver (back in the days of steam trains!), but I was told girls couldn't be train drivers. Then I decided to be a taxi driver, but, you've guessed it - girls couldn't be taxi drivers either! I'm so glad times have changed.
-
I wanted to be a vet or a doctor. But after finishing high school, I wanted to study languages and work in an international organization, like UNICEF or UN, so I ended up studying russian and Eastern European languages, culture, history, political sciences and international relations. But life has its funny ways, and I am instead working as an equine photographer for a company dedicated to promote Lusitano horses and Portuguese equestrian culture.
I am thinking about reeducate myself, and study psychology. -
Although I'm only 17 and not allowed to get a job or work...mom. Anyways, when I was really little I wanted to become an all type professional vet! And, own the biggest no-kill shelter for all domestic, wild, and exotic animals in the world! My dream has never faded away no matter what I was told, I still think the same way today. Although I know I basically need to become a multi billionaire to build the shelter, I still hold dear to my dream even if I will never succeed. I just need to enter in the lottery 5 or 10 times every time and I'll be set! =))

Well hmm..my childhood dreams.
First I wanted to be an airline pilot. Not possible since I'm hearing impaired.
Then I wanted to be a truck driver. That was possible until the feds changed regulations while I was still in high school. So that went out the window.
Now, they can waive the regulations, but it's quite a process. I would still love to drive a truck.

Bambi, you and I had the same dream!! I LOVED Keiko and wanted to do marine bio. As I grew up I switched to wanting to be a large animal vet, but found myself not quite cut out for the hard science classes.
My junior year of college, I switched to studying wildlife biology with the intent of doing conservation work (would have loved to do marine conservation - I still love whales :) ). Sort of by accident I fell in love with policy and law, so have done some work in wildlife policy.
Now I work for a natural resource management agency in PR :) Way different than anything I would have planned to do, but I LOVE it. -
I wanted to be a vet, too! Then, as a teen, I had a passing thought that it would be cool to be a police officer. I didn’t think I’d be capable, though, so I kept on the vet track.
I am not good with math, though, so I gave up on that. I was going to be a farrier for a while, but I decided I’d rather just do my own horses. It’s so hard on the back!
I work in factories currently, and I’m working towards becoming a police officer. It’s a long process! -
I wanted to win the Olympics in both the equestrian events AND figure skating in the same year! :-O (this was back before the started alternating every other year). I've never been on ice skates in my life!
In high school and college I switched to wanting to be an industrial psychologist and/or work in theater. I got a double major in theater and psych, then, as it tends to do, real life got in the way. I got a job with a large(ish) barn in San Diego for a while, which was a dream come true for the poor preachers kid from the Midwest! (OK, not really POOR so much as pastors salary- dad, and nurses salary - mom, middle class. Either way, not enough to buy a horse!)

I wanted to be a scientist and ended up as a industrial/analytical chemist specializing in pollution management. I left that field after 6 years working in R&D due to health issues.
I now work as a manager in a Casino, will have clocked up 20 years in December (not too bad when this was supposed to be a years break until I got my health in order and took up a prestigious research position). I also met my soulmate at the casino.
No complaints.

I wanted to be a cowgirl or a teacher. I am now a church secretary.

I wanted to be a vet growing up, until I was around 13ish. Then after my great grandfather passed, I wanted to be a mortician after meeting the lady in charge of his funeral.
After high school I decided to work instead of going to college since most schools in the US that offer classes for mortuary science have a long wait list, some up to 5 years and there's only 7 colleges that offer it. Ended up having 2 kids, I still want to eventually go back to school to be a mortician, but it will evolve moving to a different state and will have to wait until my kids are a little older and can fend for themselves for a couple hours lol. I worked in the health care industry for a little while, but currently work in a lumber mill as a saw operator since it pays more than the health care industry here. -
Well, I first wanted to be a farmer, but was told that I couldn't because you have to be raised on a farm (we were semi-rural and had chickens/pigs but not a farm by any means). So I switched to wanting to be a vet.
And now I am a vet and I own a 17 acre farm. But since so many people talk about wanting to be a vet, I will tell you DON'T DO IT! You will be heavily in debt the rest of your life and have a job that pays like crap and clients that treat you like garbage. If you like animals, get a job that pays well and doesn't cause massive debt and then you will have plenty of free time and extra money to spend with animals. If I could do it all again, I would get a technology degree, get a high paying job and buy a much nicer farm to have my animal fix.Post edited by monsterpony at 2019-05-19 10:48:34 -
When I was a kid, I wanted to be an archaeologist (Indiana Jones style, discovering pyramids in the south american jungles!), then a geneticist, then a psychologist, then a librarian. I ended up leaving the library to move in with my spouse, and now I'm working at a shitty hotel for another two years or so, until the cattle ranch can support us all full-time :)ID #238663, she/her pronouns

I use to work for a vet when I was in high school, I trained their racehorse babies though... I seen the ugly side that you talked about how clients treating their vets like dookie.. he ended up forming an "oh well" attitude as in, say a client fought his diagnosis, it was "then go find someone else" kind of way.. that's why I make sure to tell my vet how much I appreciate everything she has done for my boy especially when he ended up sick last year! I never had a vet that I could send a text to asking if this looked normal or what do you think about doing this treatment or so on and so forth!
