Contest: Your dream horse (Ended)
  • I want so start a series of different competitions here, just for fun. Everyone can participate!

The first one is about your dream horse.
Do you already own your dream horse? Or are you still dreaming?
Tell me whatever you want about him or her. Breed? Dicipline? Colour? Personality? Fun stories?

On Monday, I will pick a random entry, who will win 300 000 hbs, to give a boost before the new breeding season. There may be other prizes as well (*)

  • My dream horses are the off the track thoroughbreds I used to help rehab lol my favorite colors are probably the paints and dappled grays but I’ve never really looked at color with them because they all had these giant personalities :) Watching them kind of throttle back from track life and see their regular “horsey” personas come out was amazing. We even had some of our guys go on to do dressage and jumping pretty successfully. OTTBs are just incredibly versatile gentle giants who sometimes go fast lol
  • My dream horse for years has been a (of course black) Friesian. (Although I wouldn't mind a Sport
    Friesian.)

I would have her do dressage (though I wouldn't compete cause I just ain't a fan of bits. Although i know there's nothing wrong with them if you know how to use it.) And of course being out in the middle of nowhere we would also just be just riding a trial chilling out. With of course the thousands of things that can make a horse spook and make them act like it's the end of the world.

I would like a (of course not new as green on green makes black and blue) challenging horse. As in, she has a gigantic personality. One that tests and pushes me to better myself, wether I like it or not. A horse that when she leaves me, I will feel as if I had spent my whole life with her and only her, and it was just me and her the whole time...I really want a bond that's shared when having a horse. Cause it just ain't about you. It's about you AND your horse. That teamwork you do everyday and the things you go through and accomplish with each other sounds like my kinda of sister.

And I'm just realizing this was a little competition. I thought it was just sharing your stories and thoughts about your dream horse, well now you know. Even though I read...omg I didn't comprehend. Lol.
  • I’ve had many dream horses! One dream horse I’ve long had was a chestnut with stockings and a blaze like Adam’s horse from Bonanza. For my first horse, I wanted a registered AQHA or APHA mare that I could breed someday.

And it just so happens that my first horse was not only an APHA registered, very nice looking mare but also my chestnut with stockings and a blaze! She’s been everything I could have hoped for and more. I’ve decided against breeding her, though, and opted to buy my next prospect instead.

For my next, I wanted a cow bred registered AQHA or APHA filly that I could start and train myself. My plans kept getting delayed, but this wonderful gelding with a crooked leg and a club foot just dropped in my lap. He’s APHA with older cow breeding and happens to also be chestnut with a stocking and a blaze.

So I’ve had my dream horse two times over! Not exactly the way I dreamed them to be, but all I could have hoped for and more.
  • I already own my dream horse. She’s a red dun quarter horse with a great personality named Aerie. She doesn’t just do things for me, but if I ask, she responds, so she’s a great teacher in that respect. She’s also willing to try new things - we’ve started in reining & are looking at showing sometime in the future in that, and our most recent adventure, mounted shooting. When we need a break? Trails through the woods it is. Couldn’t ask for a better best friend.
  • The first one is about your dream horse.
Do you already own your dream horse? Or are you still dreaming?

I would be lying if I said I already owned my dream horse.. fact of the matter is, my boy is everything i never wanted! He's an off the track Thoroughbred, he's 17hh, he's Bay with a small star and back "low rise" socks... I always imagined myself one day owning an Arabian... Sleek, smart, agile... But when I walk into that barn and my "everything I never wanted" OTTB looks me in the eyes, perks his ears up and give me a nicker... I couldn't imagine being owned by any other horse but him! We're going on 16 years of a chaotic rollercoaster of ups and downs together.. but no matter what we've been through, he's my rock.. my shoulder to cry on... My childhood love! We found each other as babies... He was 2 and I was 13. We'd lay in his stall together every night for hours while my mom worked. I remember one night his groom walked by, looked at us, and shook his head.. he went straight to my mother and told her "that horse is going to kill your daughter one day".. everyone seen a horse who was crazy when they looked at him... I seen a horse who was misunderstood.. and he seen the same when he looked at me. A little girl plagued with a hurtful childhood where her parents did nothing but fought when her father was home the 1 day a week when he was an over the road truck driver.. we both just needed sanity, and we found it in each other! So in a way, yes! I own my dream horse :)

  • I have always wanted to get a mustang. Thus far, due to time and resources, I haven't been able to accomplish that, and I feel like the older I get, the less likely I'm going to be to do it. But I love handy, stocky "square-built" horses. In my (limited) experience, mustangs tend to either come out with beautiful legs and great feet or in thrown-together copy and pasted horses parts. But man, those square, stocky, well built ones? To die for.

  • I've always had two dream horses ( one of which I own)

My first and most favorite would be the "golden" alkhal-teke. My dream is to buy a recently weaned foal, raise and train him all by myself and then take him to Olympic level eventing. And eventually have him to start my line of breeding purebred akhal-tekes. Personality wise...I would just want one that would be willing to do anyrhing but at the same time I've always been attached ti the problem ones and always seem to pick out the wildest horses in the area... I love to train things, even if it has nothing to do with jumping or dressage. I love teaching my horses barrel racing, liberty, whips, lassos, guns, trail riding... everything and anything you can think of I would want to train him.

My second dream horse would be a Dutch warmblood, one if which I own. My dream warmblood coat would be a black horse, a star, 3 or 4 white low socks and 16+ hands. All of which I somehow magically got for an amazing deal. He is a gelding so I cant breed him but he tries his hardest for me and I cant be happier to own one of my two dream breeds. Hes a fun one..he is a 9 year old that came from the amish. His love really lays in jumping ( his first show he wont grand champion ) but he loved to play with the western things, liberty, and just hanging out at the barn together for hours. Hes the biggest puppy dog and loves to get groomed and cuddled. And while many horses like a cookie after a ride, hes more then happy to just go and have a good role in the arena and some scratches on his neck.

  • I have yet to get my dream horse, unfortunately, but I think I've ridden enough to know what I will one day want. Getting a horse just isn't in the cards for me right now since I'm heading to college in the Fall.

I think I would want a mare, as opposed to a gelding, but I don't think I'm too picky. I would love to have a beautiful black, grullo, or buckskin sabino or frame overo filly that I could raise from when she's very young. I think I'd like her to be appendix, which is a mix between thoroughbred and quarter or APHA. I would want her to be around 15 hands, no taller than 16.1 but no shorter than 14.1. I would use her as a western pleasure and barrel racing horse. Personality-wise, I definitely would want her to be an in-your-pocket, puppy-dog sort of horse. I love braiding and grooming horses, so I'd want her to enjoy that with me. Once she gets older, sometime in her teens, I'd want to breed her a couple times (and hopefully avoid lethal white :() I would want her to not be too light in the mouth, but not so heavy that she won't listen. I'd want her to have more go than woah, but also be willing to listen. I'd want her to be spunky and sweet, if that's even possible.

Anyway, maybe once I graduate graduate school waayyyy in the future, I'll be able to find a horse like her. At the end of the day, performance and personality is far more important to me than color or height.

  • My dream horse ( I do not own) would be a Knabstrupper. I love the leopard spots they produce it has always been a favorite of mine. They are such versatile athletes with an interesting back ground.

  • My dream horse is a Bay Leopard Appaloosa gelding that is trained through 1st level dressage :x

I almost own my dream horse :)) Angel is a Bay Roan Leopard Appaloosa but that's as close as she comes lol Angel is my 17 year old leopard appaloosa mare that is also a registered Colorado Ranger. She was a barrel horse/trail horse for basically her whole life so learning dressage has proven interesting :)) But she is my heart horse through and through. Competed on her for one year in 2010 and then she was sold and i didn't see her for 8 years. Least summer the lady who bought her contacted me offering Angel to me for sale :) I am still in disbelief every time i look out in my back yard. I never thought i would see her again, let alone own her!

  • Gelding, either Friesian or Spanish (Andalusian, Lusitano, etc) crossed with Appaloosa or Knabstrupper for a big blanket on a bright bay coat, nice big shoulders, powerful butt, just a tiny bit of feathering, and an upright neck. I love my Appies, but don't like their stock horse neck out level with their withers.

  • I do currently own my dream horse.

He is an OTTB named Boat parade (barn name blitz). He is sired by Royal Academy who is by Nijinsky and Crimson Saint and is out of Twilight Parade by El prado his only notable pedigree is Nijinsky and Northern dancer. He is about 10-11 years old and is grey (dream color). He does western/English but is currently unrideable because I need to get him fattened up. As per all thoroughbreds he loves to run like an arabian with his tail cocked up high. the funniest story I think is when before I got him he was an absolutely terrible racehorse, as he was superslow. He also has half a pecker (idk how that happened soooo yeah)
Licensed for Mushroom,Onyx, Watercolor, Ice 13, ice 16, Phantom lace, Phantom Diamond sparkle.
  • My dream horse is a tall (15.2) Morgan gelding with Immortal Command in his bloodlines. I want an athletic and smart partner for the Sport Horse division, some Trail, some Dressage or Western Dressage, and would love to do some Ranch Horse events.

Immortal Command was a dreamy stallion that I met as a kid. He has plenty of descendents around so I hope one day to own one.

  • I pretty much love all kinds of horses, but my dream horse? One of the Indian breeds, preferably the Kathiawari. Crazy rare, but I fell in love a long time ago and can't help it. I love India itself, and combining a piece of Indian history with a beautiful, unique horse is just -kisses fingers- perfection.
  • The are so many that I want, but if I had to pick a dream horse, it would be an Arab. Not one of the modern western ones (by which I mean both the discipline and the hemisphere, the ones bred to look like stock horses and the American/ European ones with the crazy exaggerated faces) but an actual desert Arab. Probably a mare in the classic black or grey. I know that's a stereotype, lol, the little horse crazy girl wanting the pretty little Arab, but there's more to it for me. I love their looks, but moreso their personalities and athleticism.
But the other thing is that I'm mixed race- I'm part white and part Arab, but my family is super racist about it. We Do Not talk about it. My family actively pretends to be white, which works for most of them, as I'm the only one who doesn't consistently "pass". I've never been afraid of our culture, though I was taught to be. The only thing anybody would tell me about that side of the family was about their 'mean streak' - stories about the nasty things certain individuals apparently did. So I was never really allowed any connection to my heritage- except horses. Now that I'm an adult I'm reclaiming some of it, but horses are still important to me as something I grew up with as a positive connection to my ancestry. The middle east was where some of the first 'horse people' come from, and the Arab is the one that changed the entire horse world. I really love the other middle eastern breeds as well- the akhal teke comes to mind- but as I'm probably Arab, that's the big one. (All I really know is 'Syrian' so statistically I'm probably Arab, but I could probably actually be Persian or Kurdish or something for all I know). Also I want a smart, quick, athletic horse that I can do anything with, so. Arabs.

  • I have had 1 and currently have 1.
1st- Fahrenhiet was a fire colored PB chestnut sabino Arabian gelding by Fire Alert by Bask*. There wasn't anything he wouldnt do if I asked him. We did it all from halter to WP to hunter/jumper to trail and (Arabian) costume class. He won multiple Arabian regional championships. His favorite thing was to have to you play with his tongue, lol. Unfortunately, I lost him a few months after he turned 7 & 2 weeks before my bday. That sucks when your almost 15.

2nd is my girl Daz. Her grandsire is AQHA Hall of fame horse Sonny Dee Bar. She is the spitting image of him except as a roan and overo. She is another amazingly versatile girl. We did everything from halter to WP to working ranch horse/reining/cutting. Her "play time" was running barrels or using her herd as cattle and cutting/sorting them on her own, lol. She is 19 now and enjoying her retirement in my pasture with my Elixer ( by Elitest ) daughter (18) and my black Arab daughter (23) of Asila (Egyptian import). Ive had some pretty amazing horses. Really can't dream of any better than the ones I have.
  • My current horse was nothing I ever wanted, but turned out to be everything I could have asked for and more. I was sitting in front of a stall at my first barn as a teenager, crying because I horse I was in love with just failed his pre purchase exam. My trainer found me, consoled me, and told me, hey, I have a gelding you should try... he's not what you've been asking for, but lets give him a shot. I wanted a stock horse to do hunter/jumper with; he was a purebred, type-y Arabian trained in western pleasure. I was skeptical.

But - needless to say - I tried him out and the rest is history. Eleven years, four National titles, dozens of Regional titles, a USDF Bronze Medal (how did we go from western pleasure to dressage? Well that's a story for another time...), and endless happy memories later, me and my boy and inseparable. He is truly my heart horse and I can't imagine my life without him. He has made EVERY one of my wild, crazy, impossible dreams in equestrian sport possible, and for that, he is and will always be my improbable dream horse.

Now.... if we're REALLY dreaming about a horse I don't currently own......... my dream horse is a half Arabian, half Hanoverian gelding. Tall, like 16,2hh+, either chestnut or bay with chrome. I also love me a dark solid bay... Ideally this dream horse would already be comfy at Third Level dressage and could take me through Fourth Level and into FEI, aka past where my current horse maxed out and into levels I haven't done before. I would love for him to be competitive at USDF Regionals and to someday win an Arabian national championship :X

  • My dream horse would be a dappled grey off track thoroughbred! One who is athletic enough to jump 4'+ but who can stay calm and take a joke. It would ideally be around 16.2- 17.3h and a gelding. I have been looking for one for agessss! I have been training and restarting ottbs for a while now but never found the perfect fit. I was starting to get a little discouraged. I do have my current dream PONY who i love with everything but she is only 14.2 and cannot jump as high as I need. My trainer so graciously has been letting me borrow her horses to jump and ride. It has been quite a few years I had been looking.
But then I finally got my dream horse! He was a present for my birthday this year :D
He is awesome standing at 16.3 h with a calm personality and BEAUTIFUL gaits. He is 9 which is a perfect age, no baby tantrums but not an old man lol.
    Picture of him below :)

  • Growing up we didn’t have extra money for lessons or horses (other than the few years I lived with my dad and his girlfriend on her farm and she had 3 horses) so I picked up rides wherever I could in exchange for chores. Usually ended up with the one the owner preferred not riding because of one issue or another (or more). I got good at handling the difficult ones but when it came time for me to find a horse of my own they helped put a bunch of don’t wants on my list.

Dream horses (I’ve always wanted 2. One for me and another for whoever else wanted to ride with me):

    -Black and white registered paint
    -gelding
-3-5 years old. Started under saddle but not to set in bad habits that I’d have to fight to fix or have to go back to fix holes in training
    -laid back and easy going
-Future husband horse (didn’t mind working for a few years to get to that point)
-showable. I wanted to get more into showing at higher level shows but be able to load up and go to a local saddle club with cousins or whoever else wanted to tryout a horse show
-rideable by anyone. I wanted to be able to know that if I put someone on him I could walk away and not worry
    -tall 15.2+ and slim
-able to be easily sold if something happened and I needed to sell

One day I was doing chores at my old barn (I had leased my cousins horse for 2 years but continued doing chores at the barn after she went back) and when I walked in there was this big black and white head looking over a stall door and I was like that’s what I’m looking for! As I left the barn the BO asked how I liked the new boarder. I said I loved his looks. By the time I got home the instructor had texted me saying she didn’t think I would’ve liked him because he’s 4 but he had a 2year old half brother and sister for sale if I wanted to go look at them. Wasn’t interested in the mare but said let’s go see the half brother.

When we got to the other barn the trainer met us at the door and asked who we were there to see again and when I said I liked Timmy and were looking at the half brother and sister she said oh did you also want to see his full brother too? So we walked into the barn and around the corner and there was this tiny little face with bright blue eyes staring through the bars and I thought crap I hope that’s one of the horses I’m here to look at because darn it I’m seeing Stars already! And she stopped in front of his stall.

But he was a yearling and when we went into the arena he spooked and got the lead line wrapped around his leg and took off broncing. Spent the whole ride home trying to get my instructor to talk me out of buying him because I knew I was wearing some bright rose coloured glasses even tho I could see issues that I didn’t want to deal with including the fact that he was over a year younger than I wanted. All she said is his markings made him look like he had a black eye and his eyes were disconcerting. I never did see the half siblings and he came home a month later after he was gelded (Facebook is showing me all his cute baby pics this week as it was 9 years ago that I met him now)

Not even 2 weeks after I got him home he spooked and tried jumping a fence and impaled himself in the groin on the broken board because another horse looked at him and took a few steps in his direction. He was pastured with a pony for the first few years and she terrorized him and was constantly giving him the mare stare to keep him away from the hay and instilling the fear of other horses getting him in that is still present today (although he is finally starting to mature enough to not have a complete meltdown when horses get in his bubble now)

The first few years were rough but when he turned 6 my 4 year old cousin started riding him (unassisted at home and showing leadline) he loved her and turned into such a babysitter that he refused to go faster than she was capable of balancing to and would stand solid any time she was on the ground around him. He also was shown by my other cousin although she isn’t quite as interested in growing her riding skills and flops about a bit more than she should but he handles it. He also keeps getting better when we go showing and handles whatever class I decide to try him in from English to western pleasure, trail, ranch riding, horsemanship and equitation, jumping

Finally he was turning into my dream horse. Every year he gets better and better and even though I keep telling my mom to sell him if something happens to me she tells me that he’s not going anywhere if she has to get a second job.

Now I have a few extra conditions to the above list but mostly cosmetic:

-more black less white (especially on his knees)
-Black mane and tail (because Riley has white and they are constantly horribly grungy looking)
-less mane (cuz Riley has such a thick fluffy slightly curly mane that it takes forever to do it up for shows without it looking like some kindergartener was doing art)
    -yearling gelding

  • Excuse me while I brag for a second :))
When I first got into horses, I thought my dream horse was a younger (5-6),18hh+, sabino draft horse of any kind. While I’m still absolutely obsessed with pretty drafts, I’ve grown to realize that maybe my dream horse wasn’t what I thought it was.
A few years ago, I bought my mare named Willow. Grade, 14 years old, quarter horse x Tb, 15.2hh, fleabitten/grey. She was going to be a summer project that I would put some training on and sell to a nice relaxed home at the end of August. As you can probably guess, I ended up getting attached. She is definitely my heart horse and I’ve yet to meet another horse that I connect with as well as I do with her. Initially I thought I’d turn her into a drill team horse, but it didn’t seem like her calling. Decided to try hunters, just to see if she would like it (I have 7+ years of experience in both English and western disciplines) but that didn’t seem to interest her, either. So I finally decided to try trail riding and classes- who would have known she’d love them so much! She’s now my favorite, (practically bomb proof), all around trail horse that I can always count on to take care of me when the greenies are getting on my nerves :))
I love her to bits and wouldn’t trade her for the world- If I could figure out how to upload pictures of her, I would! This July I’d have had her for five years- she’s 19 now and of course getting up there, but still acts like she’s young. I do work with drafts now though, as a surprise! The newbie I just got in maybe two weeks ago is a gorgeous Percheron mare named lily- so I do still get some draft horse love, even though willow will always be my main girl :x

  • I used to want a big black or dark bay jumper to show, something young that I could work on. Then between going to college and a really nasty fall off of a thoroughbred Percheron cross I’ve changed my mind.

Now that I have graduated and have a job, I’ve been working on getting back to riding. My ideal horse would definitely be a black frame paint horse gelding. Blue eyes would be a bonus. Personality-wise I would want him to be easygoing and levelheaded enough for most people to ride him but with enough energy to do some smaller jumping courses.
  • I used to dream about a solid black gelding.
Now I have a dark bay mare(along with others) I think my dream horse now is a American BLM mustang. And I just so happen to be picking up my first one in about a week.
  • Thank you everyone! I have enjoyed reading everything! My goodness, you have some fun and interesting horses :D
