Invisible Appy spots?
-
This is long, so bear with me :))
I don't know if this question can be answered by your guys' game knowledge, but my mare Moonbeam is a Cherry Bay Blanket Appaloosa. Her dam was a dark bay roan blanket appaloosa. Moonbeam was born with no white markings. None on the face, none on the legs, and no roan. She started getting white hairs on the center face when she was about 5 (she' 7 now). This year the white "roan" hairs grow around "invisible" appy patches revealing spots! I'm assuming it's genetic as the spots are the same size and spaced the same as the spots on her blanket. Is it genetic? Is this a common thing in appys? Does it appear in the game?

Mad props to those who can figure this out :x
*also please tell me if this needs to be put somewhere else on the forum*Post edited by Craig at 2019-06-11 22:55:05 -
It's varnish.. as Appaloosa age, the varnish turns the coat white. The spotted areas aren't immediately effected by the varnish.
Great example of this is Mystic Warrior... (Well known Friesian Appaloosa I am lucky enough to have known personally when he was younger)

I'm still a little lost. She was born without the spots, and now she has them? Is that like reverse varnish? Because Mystic was born with spots, and the varnish covered them up. Whereas Moonbeam was born without the face spots and then developed them. Is that still varnish?Post edited by Craig at 2019-06-11 21:55:26

This is the only other example i've seen similar to Moonbeam. The owner says that her horse is a varnish roan, but does it work that way? Does Varnish cover up spots and reveal them? I'm really confused :))

Mystic Warrior is grey. That’s why his pattern was so wild when he was a foal (grey does that to appy patterns in foals) then so white so quickly as he grew.
AFAIK varnish doesn’t tend to affect spots. Just non spotted areas.Thanked by 1Kintara -
Yes this is very common and can be seen in the game as well.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Mystic Warrior was definitely not Gray.
His mother (Sequoia) was out of a Black Appaloosa mare and a Friesian stallion and Mystic was by a Friesian stallion. I use to show with his breeders granddaughters in Pennsylvania before they sold him and Sequoia to Dawn Trujillo. -
Mystic Warrior is well known for being grey, it came from the dam. He's almost completely greyed out nowPost edited by Kintara at 2019-06-12 04:57:46

So, I wish I had a before picture of her, but I have a good example of varnish and spots over on the other server.
Her body used to be the much darker color of her spots, and her spots were only visible to where her blanket ended, mid-back. As her body has varnished, her spots have not. The varnish has revealed spots down her barrel and all the way up her shoulders.

Mystic Warrior is used as one of the model horses for the strange things gray does with.Need to contact me? Read this first.
