Repeat pair breeding
-
I'm yet to breed my top producing mare this season as I can't decide which stud to pair her with. She's not papered yet as only two foals so far and I've got 3 studs to choose from for the third.
Question for all you experienced breeders is - do repeat pair breedings generally give similar results or do you often get two foals with greatly differing quality from the same parents on a 2nd or 3rd time pair breeding?
She's an XPro as are all 3 studs, 2 of which she's already been bred to.
First stud breeding gave me an A papered colt with 10.2pt
Second stud breeding gave me a filly with 11pt who was the highest pt foal of her year for era4.
Both the 2nd and 3rd stud have given A papered colts from other XPro mares, the 3rd stud is untried with this mare.
I just can't decide which way to breed her :-?Post edited by Jemimapuddleduck at 2015-08-25 15:19:11 -
You can absolutely get wildly different results by repeating the same breeding, almost a full point of swing between extreme ends of the spectrum. Technically speaking, if your studs are all ExPros, there's basically zero difference between them and what you're seeing in the PT scores is just different rolls of the same dice.

Here is a perfect example of what Stone Silo just said. These two boys are full brothers however, the 6yo is superior to the older one. I was hoping for a similar foal that I could just boost, but was pleasantly surprised when I ran the comparison test.

Thank you, really useful answers and pretty much as I thought given that real life breeding more often than not gives the same variances for repeat breeding. A lot of breeders I know of don't send a mare back to a stud if they get a good result first time
Doesn't help my decision though lol -
This was a 4th gen pairing, so a greater range than you'd find pairing two same level foundations but the 13 foals have PT scores ranging from 10.2 to 11.8! :DBluegrass #143376 * Specializing in Iced Axiom (ExPro Cobs) and Iced Phantoms (PF Riding Ponies)
