Share Your Unpopular Color Opinions!
-
I'm curious about everyone's wildly varied opinions and preferences, so share your Unpopular Opinions here! Is there any genes/colors/traits that are really popular but you don't like, or something you think is beautiful that nobody else seems as excited about?
I'll start: I really don't like dun or nd1. I don't know why, I just don't. I also think warmbloods are boring looking, but they seem to be most people's favorite! On the other hand, I really love pearl and champagne and think they might be a little under appreciated.
What do you think?Spiderweb Stables

I am not a huge fan of dun the way it appears in the game (you just can’t really see it) but love it in real life (my mare is a red dun and her sister is a palomino dun).
I am really into creme (cremello and palomino), liver (I know, total opposites), and splash right now.
People seem to love it, but I am not a huge kit producer fan.
Cool idea for a conversation topic! -
I only like ND1 on DP buckskins, bays, and browns. The dapples stand out really well that way. I don't like warmbloods myself, they look like the dimensions are off slightly. Maybe not but it's the way my eye picks up the sizes. Drafts and riding horses are my thing. I've got a Celestial herd(all axioms and wrong warp), gold champagnes(mostly appaloosa), liver, silver black chinchilla, and a silver bay snowflake line. Gold champagne doesn't seem to be too popular. Liver and silver black are hotcakes :)) Not real fond of the Ice genes and Thunderstruck.Post edited by bluchrystals at 2019-06-15 12:18:16

Is disliking varnish an unpopular opinion?
I looove apps but it makes me so sad to see them lose their spots. I would love to do some GMT work with them but I don't want to eventually not be able to see the results. Of course I definitely appreciate that it's true to life though, ah well :))ID: 247225

I love Liver and Chocolate but I’m also working on a Grey Line lol I love dappled greys in real life and I feel like they don’t get a lot of love hereThanked by 1Cavalynn

I'm not big on the wrong warp, Ice, dun W1 and splash genes
I also agree with Blu in that the warmblood dimensions look off to me.. but then again I'm also biased to the fact I love Arabians and drafts in real life :-??
I have a KP, 2 DP (liver/chocolate palomino and a Cherry Drop), a hom PATN1 Black/silver black app/Chinchilla lines and also a misfit herd with a chocolate palomino stud going right now
On my other account I have Liver, black W2 and Black Rabicano drafts.. -
@Nikkel666 I think grey gets the short end for the same reason people don't like varnish- before long you lose the color and it's just a white horse! I'm with you @Peachtree , I don't like varnish either, for that reason! I'm starting a new pearl/kp line and I'm keeping app out of it completely, even though it's one of my favs, so I don't lose my kp's patches as they age!
@LenasHollywood , I get you on the opposites! I want livers as dark as possible, and also pearls and champs, lol.
@blu , I was actually thinking gold seemed like the most popular of the champagnes! I prefer sables and classics.
I really don't like ice either, or white 8. And Wrong Warp kinda freaks me out? It seems... well, wrong!
The warmbloods don't seem disproportionate to me, they just look like quarter horses. I suppose they're off as compared to a Dutch Warmblood or something, but they look like pretty much every quarter horse on every farm in this part of the country! But I prefer hot or cold blooded horses in real life as well.Spiderweb Stables

I'm the same way about varnish, really. Appies' coats lose all that lovely contrast and it always bums me out.
I love dun and nd1, though. And gray. Let's see, ice 9 and ice 14 are actually my least favorite ice genes, but most people seem to love them. Love ice in general, though. And I think roan and rabicano are really underappreciated!Post edited by SherwoodStables at 2019-06-15 12:45:26 -
@Natalya, maybe it's that people don't show them off as much?
-

I feel like I'm the only person in the game who doesn't like liver! I breed almost exclusively buckskin appaloosa. I feel like liver is one of the most boring colors but everyone seems to love it! I feel crazy.
I also don't care for warmbloods and especially not riding horses. I just think riding horses' heads look really weird. I will take a few warmbloods here and there but I mostly breed draft.
I think sooty and dp are cool and all, but maybe not up to all the hype. I love the way buckskin can come in so many shades and variations, so that's why I play with it. I haven't found many others who breed a lot of buckies. Right now, I'm super into snowflake, but that's a pretty popular opinion :P
Also, I don't really care for any of the ice genes! I like colors and patterns that mimic real life, and ice just doesn't do it for me. I don't think I would ever spend money on it.Post edited by newmag1659 at 2019-06-15 14:44:40 -
So... I really don’t like Drafts! I breed mostly Riding Horses, but I own an Arabian in RL. I have some WBs as well, but don’t like how the drafts look.
Also really not a huge fan of Appaloosa, W1, or W2. I strongly dislike bay in the game and grey as well, even though I love both in RL. I like DP buckskin with S+, but not a huge fan of buckskin on its own nor do I like homozygous cream.
As for Fantasy genes, I dislike Ice 1, Ice 8, not huge on Ice 10, don’t like Plaid and strongly dislike Thunderstruck!
What do I love? Homozygous DP liver chestnuts/chocolate palominos, nd1, frame, w10 and w3, Splash M, Kit M, w8, and Sb2. I love Watercolor with Ice, Nacre, most of the Ice genes, and I also breed silver black chinchillas and DP chestnut mushrooms. -
I hate plaid, I can't believe I forgot that one!Spiderweb Stables

Oh! Me, too, @Natalya!
-
So as far as loves S+, sooty, sabino 1 & 2, splash, frame, roan, rabicano, most
Kit genes, lol, and my newly discovered KP, lol. Oh, and nexus. I'd seriously considered a black rabicano/roan nexus line.
Dislikes/hates is appy. I have a few but unless it's a color/pattern that strikes me I just don't like it. I feel the same with RL appys too ( my barrel racer would bite me for saying that, lol. She was a leopard appy. Rip Dusty.).
Give or takes depending on the colors is some ice, watercolors, wrongwraps, plaids.
Don't have a fav or like/dislike with sizes. I've owned/showed/competed/trained on everything in RL from POA, Arab, AQHA, APHA, WB, TB, to draft crosses who looked pure draft with half the floof lol. Still have an Arab (14.2hh) , APHA (15.1hh) and APHA/TB (16.1hh).
-
Lol this is great seeing everyone's differences. We have very wide tastes.
I love all the breeds for their uniqueness and love the extreme in heights. Really want to breed for teeny ponies and super tall. Riding horses for their delicate looks, Warmbloods truly look athletic, and the drafts for their thick legs and big heads.
Colors... Plaid is my favorite. I love how varied they can look. Watercolor grew on me and now I love it. I'm a big fan of Palomino and Buckskin IRL and in the game. I also love DP as the Morgan breed loves the produce super sooty and liver/black chestnuts. -
It is cool how much variation there is, even for what I'd say are the most popular genes!
There really is a color for everyone here on HAJ :) -
I try not to hate any colour, I mean Ammit puts lot of effort into all the colours for us. But I don't personally like snowflake much, I just ignore it if it's in the lines, I don't have many appies anyway so it's not going to show up. Double creams, champagne and grey aren't really my thing either, although I have plenty of them, I just don't breed for them as such
-
Hmm I'm not sure if these are unpopular opinions or not, but..
I started out only liking drafts, but recently I have come to appreciate all of the builds on here. I wasn't very fond of the warmbloods but now I have a few foals from my draft x riding horse crosses and I have come to like them.
I absolutely adore blue roan horses. I also love any cream horses. Perlino is gorgeous imo. I also love sable and liver.
Oh and brindle. I love the brindle marking. -
@Kintara, I feel you on that actually. But at the same time I feel like one of the best things about H&J is that there's so much variety and everyone can breed for whatever they want, all across the board. So I don't feel so bad about hating a color because I know lots of other people love it, and that variety is a good thing!Spiderweb Stables

I don’t care for the fantasy genes. I like realism. I’m also finding that I’m not a fan of champagne.
I am loving DP on everything, though. -

In this game, the genes I least like are gray and tobiano. I just feel that they are so outdated compared to all the other genes that have been updated. They're not dynamic.
IRL I love the dark greys that take several years to fade. Here, we don't have the slow fading greys. -
I do not care for roan or dun, in the regular genes, or the various ice genes, fantasy-wise. Brindle is very nice, but more trouble than it's worth to breed for.ID #238663, she/her pronouns
-
I don't like the riding horses but love Drafts and also like Warmbloods. For some reason I don't like tobiano or the way roan shows on most horses, but I do like rabicano. I used to like silver blacks until Ammit changed to the current colour palette and now I don't really like the way they look. On the other hand, when the new colour palette came in, I love the variety in the way the bay horses express the gene. I like dun and nd1. Initially I wasn't a fan of the fantasy genes but I now have some of the open Ice genes and also the nacre.
This just shows that the game caters for all tastes and that, if you play the game long enough, it will cater to your personal changing preferences too. =D> -
Before I list a few things of what I personally do not care for, I will say that I appreciate everything ammit has done and the incredible amount of work she's put into the game. ❤
What I do not care for is grey, light chestnuts, appaloosas that are mostly solid with no blanket or PATN1, Plaid, Palaminos, Tobiano, and riding horses. Sometimes I will see an RH that does look nice, but I personally will always breed for warmbloods or drafts. Other then that I am fairly open with colors. My obvious favorites would be DP, Liver, Mushroom, SpM, ND1, Satin, and KitM.Post edited by AmethystStables at 2019-06-16 02:01:19Previously known as "lethalximpulse". -
I'm not a big fan of appaloosa, including snowflake anymore. Reasons are their foal pic take forever to load when breeding, and they loose their shiny when they get older. Also, champagne is not a favourite
I loooove KP, DP, chinchilla and mushroom. Then I add in alittle of everything patternwise and fantasywise.ID 195859 -
Ooooooh. My foal pics tale forever to load because they’re appies? Lol
-
@paradoxphoenix Yup :-)) I love that appaloosa is dynamic, but I just aint got time for that. lolID 195859

Haven’t been on the forums in a while so I don’t know what’s “unpopular” at this moment. I will guess that total disregard for color when breeding isn’t super popular, but I only have one line where colors matter and the rest make me pretty show horses of every color. The surprise is fun, and I have yet to come across any specific gene I don’t like (in nearly five real life years of playing)!
And just because I don’t personally breed for something (axiom, nexus, rainbow riot, etc) doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate it on other people’s horsesPost edited by Helia at 2019-06-16 06:28:04

I personally don’t like bay horses in real life. Everyone loves them in the QH world. I love my little Dun QH!
In the game I don’t really care for greys and I don’t like “spotted” -
I'm not into fantasy genes. I think many of them look super cool, just not my thing.
I'm probably fairly boring to many players...I breed for black and brown. I like frame, roan, splash, splash M, and some of the whites. I have a few Appies but don't breed for them. I'm starting a line of cobs and may shift the brown that way and keep the riding and sport ponies in variations of black.
I do wish not all the appaloosas had varnish (I liked way back when when it was separate). Neither of the RL appies I had ever faded and I loved that about them.
I love brindle.
I do not like chestnuts or greys. My actual horse is a dark chestnut , most would call him liver though I don't think he actually is, but in the game, I love the blacks. I don't like tobiano, nor do I love it in real life. Definitely don't like palomino (I do like buckskin), gold champagne, etc. I do like the look of red duns but not enough to breed them. I do think it's fun to have a few black-based horses that look like they should be red but aren't.
-
I don’t dislike colours I just don’t understand the hype about livers and snowflakes.
I breed grullos with white patterns topped with KP, axiom, Nexus and/or plaid.
I find it difficult to buy outside grullos without altering them accidentally for not meeting my breeding requirements or for them to be bred evenly with all grullo pedigreesPost edited by Bandit1119 at 2019-06-16 16:03:50Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes -
Bandit, I have similar issues with buying outside breeding stock since I run all breeding stock through SBA. Currently, there's only one person I will buy outside blood from on a regular basis since she does SBA and has similar quality standards to mine.
-
I’m with you bandit and Forest. I’ll only sell superior colts, breed evenly, and run everything through SBA!
-
I don't understand why people love snowflake but also don't like regular varnish. The end result is the same.
-
I've steered away from all the Ice, I did have them when I first started ... but room constants made me focus more on what I wanted and therefore the Ice went away. I didn't really like the Nexus and nor the watercolor (actually none of the fantasy genes in that way made me want to wipe out my credit card). The Splash M and Mushroom I really liked, not a huge fan of the Chinchilla. I am not a huge fan of the White except for the 10, 8 and M. Bay tends to come out of everywhere... so I tend to avoid that. Also not a huge fan of anything on my Lp but Lp, you will also note I have no tobiano that is actively being bred and if one slips in, its spayed or gelded. Other than that its all about the chrome or the flake.
As I said i have Splash M and Mushroom, which I am in the process of combining into one line, as they haven't seen much of the love from me and when my Splash M boy passed away i realized that I was loosing them. With them being restricted I wanted to keep them out of the main barns so i wouldn't whoops and I knew where they were.
Snowflake, I am all about the snowflake. I fell for that and it so suited my breeding program. The goal was black with Lp, just Lp ... but sort drifted away. I'm also about the black, I do have liver ... but mostly go for the black (I may have mentioned that once or twice lol). Black Brindle has always been my fav and covet Bring Back the Sun mares. I blame Stauffie for that, she gave me my first Bring Back the Sun mare that was GTM'd with Lp ... foundation mare of her own breeding program, that sorta got way laid and I no longer have any of her foals, but she still started it all. I love how I can open on of the Lps pages and realize that they have changed. I have watched a black go from black to white as they age in the game. I totally appreciate that little feature.
My Chrome lines support W10,W8, Wm + KP, Sb1 and Sb2 and in some of them I have it all. Black Sabino2 is my fav, and I got really lucky with Op's lines (which are getting old and I'm starting to panic to find another) and making sure I still have his line cause he was my fav stud as I whoops with my favorite Bring Back the Sun mare and lost hers. I also got a huge hand up from Visions as I worked my Kp lines and have a far amount of older lines there too.
Satin was a huge undertaking for me in the beginning and had to do some serious saving up for my own foundation stallion. I had the hugest of hands up from the already established satin breeders, so I tend to have some of the older lines of satin. The goal was black satin with just Lp, but that sorta got waylaid as i built up my breeding ... now I have two sets ... the chrome satin and the Lp satin. Right now introducing Nd1 and Snowflake into those lines and soon tiger eye. (LOVE the new Anniversary RS ... My favorite so far)
I don't do Draft and if I can I'll GMT that draft right off there, when breeding to outside studs or mares I'll find my thinnest riding horse body so that I can tone it down to a Warmblood. I am slowly getting my older lines into their riding horse bodies. I don't boost unless I really have too. I'll use boosted lines, but the Expro HH work just as well for me. I have passed up perfect studs because they were boosted, its just to hard sometimes to get them to pass strict and Sup to sire. AI hates me and takes all the pretties it seems, so I try to avoid that as well. I have collected from my own, just so in later time I still have the line (learned that one from the BBtS mare)
Everything is run through strict and I don't keep studs unless they sup to sire ... (hence the boosting if they are a breeding I can't get again). So its not really a colour I dislike ... more a pattern and size sort of thing ... and not really a dislike; if it fits into the program or at some time I can breed it to fit in the program then I'm good. I recently started with some white 3 popping up, which I am working on holding onto the line but breeding out the W3. Kinda see it as a challenge (except Tob... that just gets gelded/spayed ... not working with that one, so i guess thats a dislike lol)
And I see I novelized this post so I am quietly going to exit stage left ... sorry for the ramble ...
-
Lol it's ok, we don't mind rambling.
